Study shows kids think 'binge drinking' is normal

A recent study that questioned nearly 1,500 nine to eleven year-old children about their perceptions of adult alcohol consumption turned out some rather worrying figures.

The survey results from the Life Education charity showed that 60% of the kids surveyed believed that people on TV drank too much, with roughly the same amount believing people drink to forget their problems.

About 30% of the kiddies believed that five or more glasses of wine in one night was 'normal' for adults, with more than 25% thinking that four pints of beer an evening was ok.

One result seems to be the only giveaway that the survey was questioning under-elevens, half of them think adults only drink to 'look cool.'

  • Binge drinking can probably be considered normal for a very large section of British society. The kids have got it right.

  • Well, I personally think that this just goes to show that the whole country is circling the drain, and when this generation starts to get older and more a part of society, then we're gonna lose whatever reputation we have left with Europe and the rest of the World.

  • I guess this result isn't that surprising considering 3/4 of drinkers don't know how much a unit of alcohol is, how many units are in a typical glass of wine, or how much the recommended daily limit is (2-3 for women, 3-4 for men).

  • I like these kids. This just goes to show that children are far smarter than adults. Somehow they lose that sense of bright when they get older, but some tend to keep it.

  • Kids are emulating their parents, teachers, and other adults who want to escape the hardships of life by dulling their minds with dangerous substances.

  • We live in a world where Youtube, MySpace and Facebook is the norm. I don't even know what normal is anymore.

  • When you get to the age of drinking, or close to it, you might say that binge drinking isn't good but you probably know someone who does binge drink, or you might do it yourself.

  • Proof that a young innocent mind speaks more freely than a convoluted older one ever could. Their inner-censor is still in development. It's up to parents and teachers to get the messages straight where alcohol is concerned while those young minds are still absorbing all that shapes their futures.

Drinking has become so common in today's society that children don't know the difference between drinking and binging. It's disgusting.

  • Kids need to learn responsible drinking habits from their parents. This means a reasonable drinking age and the joy of having a couple drinks with friends. This country treats alcohol with shame and so people act accordingly they drink it and feel guilty about it and therefor fall into the mindset that they are worthless and all they should do with their life is get 'fucked up'.

  • American drinking habits are not reflective of the rest of the world, and this proves the point further. The "binge" culture is obviously not only in our alcohol consumption, but in all of our consumer based habits.

  • How many posters here are actually kids?

I honestly don't know the difference between drinking, and binge drinking...I just know that after a good nights rest, and some "Canada Dry", it'll be all good.

  • binge drinking is having more than 5 alcoholic drinks for a man or 4 for a woman(one drink= one shot of liquor or one regular sized beer) in the period of an hour. for most binge drinkers, this continues for several hours, usually ending in vomiting or passing out. young drinkers may not feel the effects of drinking initially, their bodies being in some ways more resilient than old people's. however, the long term effect on the brain in more severe for teenagers than it is for adults due to the interruption of the growing processes that are characteristic of the teenage brain. also, some people choke on their own vomit or die because they are so drunk their brain doesn't get the message to roll over and they suffocate. so if you are going to drink, why not be chill about it?

  • These children are probably watching older kids rather than just adults. And other kids are thinking that drinking is cool and getting drunk is the whole objective. Fun...no!

  • more likely they saw their parents do it first

  • possibly the whole "e-boast" ability may add/dilute to the results, but unfortunatly, we've been sneaking in our folks bottom drawer for ..centuries....

  • I do not drink alcohol or for that matter smoke, but my friend in Berlin, Germany does and over there, heck everywhere it is just a thing the people do. How can you have a party and not have alcohol.

  • Just because something is considered bad does not mean it is not normal. This study should come as no surprise.

  • Why am I not suprised by this. I keep getting pressurised to drink alcohol myself but I won't because I for one don't see it as "cool".

  • 9 to 11 year old kids? They don't even know what one glass of wine will do to someone, let alone 5. This is not a proper survey audience, especially when it comes to asking questions concerning things about which they really have no depth of knowledge.

The results don't surprise me, and I would even argue that they don't hold much merit.

  • but if you went down your street that has all the nightclubs on it on a "normal night" you would "normally see" "normall people 17-40" bindge drinking
    IT IS THE NORM
