Gorgeous evening here in Shanghai and we bring back the talk about 'nationalism'. Is it true pride or being spun by a 'higher source'?

Come on, no false modesty, please. :-)
It's great that you're giving us your perspective on how the Chinese feel about their country. Sometimes people seem to think that the Chinese are not supposed to be genuinely loving their country as long as they have the government they have. On the other hand nationalism tends to freak me out, even when it's mild.
It will be interesting to see what happens the next few months. -
now, you know I have little to no modesty - but it is true. in an interview released this Thursday, I admit to:
1. Having no college education
2. Having no previous interest in Mandarin or Chinese History
3. Have as many 'bad China' days as the next
4. Being very apolitical
...can I carry a show? Yes. But this show is not intended to make up the minds of anyone, just to add some inside-albeit-Western slant to everything going on here. Chinese media wants to make China look good. Western media wants to sell ads. I was simply wanting to archive this for my own good (at least at first); that's all.
Call it my own little crusade to take Fox News down, ha ha.
More tomorrow - an interesting 'release' to us foreigners from the gov't...it might even include you!-

I guess if your too modest you can“t run a show, at least not alone...except our Jenny Zhu ^_^
-
too true, excuter, too true.
god help me if she starts a show like this - I'll have to go back to ESL!-

Here's an article I ran across from Keith Bradsher at the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/03/world/asia/03china.ht... Looks like they're really going to clamp down on visitors in the next couple of months.
Aric, all college does is teach you how to learn, something you seem to be pretty good at on your own. Though I had read a lot about chinese history, politics, philosophy, etc., once I started dating my wife I found I didn't know a damn thing about the culture. Books are just background that prepare you for the real thing but the truth isn't found in books, it's found in people.
You know a lot more than you think you know, because you wade into things and expose yourself to a lot of situations that most people avoid. And I had to chuckle; you... apolitical? That's a good one! LOL
Keep that Texas slant comin'~ -
College and learning... I think I learned more between the classes than in them. And that's where SDSteve's note about people comes in.
For all that has happened since I was in Beijing in Feb, it certainly does seem to be almost a lifetime ago.-

you're right - I should have said 'anti-political'; but even that sounds weird.
I appreciate the support guys, and wasn't fishing for compliments - just making sure everyone knew exactly where I was positioning myself.
In all fairness, I was just going to do these for myself, and maybe on The Shanghai Show, but fortunately had a contact here at Current who helped me get it out.
It's going to get interesting - I'm tellin' ya...-

Great stuff as always, Aric. Question: have you asked any Shanghainese people about their thoughts and opinions on the Olympics, foreigners, and the Earthquake event? but in 2 age ranges, mid 40's+ and another group mid 20's+, I personally think both groups and genders would have some interesting things to say about all 3 topics if you can get that on footage to show, although it might be hard to do as there is a "red" line that Chinese nationals can't/shouldn't cross going on the record.
I say if it was any different or boring there wouldn't be anything to film or talk about, personally the media with the propaganda and daily events that happen make it more the interesting to deal with in our everyday life whether it reflects each person or not, gives the mind something to think about, imo at least.
btw what the hell is this weather about? I just got here last nite and it was 24C, and I already want to fly back, I need to search for a bra that holds ice packs that last from 9am-3pm when its hottest here.
And to whoever told you to be careful in what you post/film, F that silly bitch, he ain't got nothin, probably man PMS from not agreeing with someone else's thoughts/contribution to the public.-

good idea - but, as you said, getting the 40+ crowd to talk is damn near impossible.
and we all know why.
