Gen. Ricardo Sanchez: Bush guilty of “gross incompetence and dereliction of duty”

It must be nice to retire and finally be free to speak your mind. Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the man who led American ground forces in Iraq from 2003-2004, has released a new book– titled Wiser in Battle: A Soldier’s Story – that takes aim at the Bush administration with some of the strongest criticism to date from a former Iraq commander.

An excerpt from NPR:

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, I watched helplessly as the Bush administration led America into a strategic blunder of historic proportions. It became painfully obvious that the executive branch of our government did not trust its military. It relied instead on a neoconservative ideology developed by men and women with little, if any, military experience. Some senior military leaders did not challenge civilian decision makers at the appropriate times, and the courageous few who did take a stand were subsequently forced out of the service.

It’s gonna be hard to accuse General Sanchez of hating the troops.

Hopefully the media will give this book the attention it deserves, even in the wake of the bombshell McClellan book.

  • Yes, I hope it gets widely read. Scott McClellan's book is way late in coming and very self serving. This is more honest and written for the people.
  • His book points out the pivotal point in which many military were fired by civilian, elected officials; not military during military operations (or was it executive ops, hrmmm).

Does not compute.... need, more... data... to

Oh but that McClelan author exwhitehouse speaker guy's book. Nah, I'll stick with the 3 star.

  • Every insider who comes out is turning on this administration.
    tells you something, dont it.

  • Oh, come on. This guy isn't much better than McClellan. The military leadership is as guilty as the political leadership in rolling over for Bush. The honorable ones quit or spoke out and were fired. The politicians-in-uniform, like Petraeus, were promoted. Sanchez was the man in charge when the atrocities of Abu Ghraib accured, but does he take responsibility? I'm sure all of his criticisms of Bush are true, like with McClellan, but why did it take so long? Why not speak up when it counted and not when you could cash in? We can offer our forgiveness but they should not only offer the truth but also take some responsibility, for once.

  • Sanchez is to be commended for his efforts now. Sanchez has spoken out in the past. Putting it in writing makes it undeniable. We need many more individuals willing to come out of the closet to get America back on course.

If we attack the ones who are willing to speak up because they didn't speak up enough in the past, the rest will stay in the closet. We can't do it without their voices.

  • Its shameful that these various "insiders" are now coming to the table, eight years later. Either they were living in fear, or it has taken them this long to come to their senses. Either way, too little, too late.

  • Speaking and writing are two different languages. Saying something and writing another comes from actions done by dictations. Written dictations and following verbal orders. "Ignorance is not seeing"

After the actions, writing about the mistakes, why if your just talking about what you have done. It's like killing someone and then saying sorry. "I'm sorry, but it was not my fault".

Saying something and reading orders are two different things. How are written laws going to change on the dictation of what is said. Verbal language versus the written language

  • Of course what has gone on in the war is sickening, but yet it has happened, and the people that sit in that big white house on that big hill need to realize that we are there, the argument that Lt. General Sanchez has stated is true, we need to focus on how to correctly fix the mistakes that have happened so far and find a reasonable way to finish it. we can't simply nuke them, or just pull out. And we need to find leaders during times of war that can actually speak on it. it makes no sense why someone that has never seen combat and try to tell the troops how to fight a war. Next, lets have a fish teach babies to walk.

  • It's not too little too late! It's too late, when it's history! Today isn't history! Anyone who is willing to come forward today should be welcome.

The ONLY way we are going to change the future is by changing course today. Americans like Lt. General Sanchez and Scott McClelland and all the rest being honest about what has happened, is how we can change the future. If they are forced to stay silent, we will never find out information that is out of public view. This administration has managed to classify or hide information. Individuals can't be hidden, they can write books, they can ‘Swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God' ‘under oath‘!

It’s not over, as many would have you believe. We still have many months till November, ‘08. We need to see government in action. ‘Of the people, by the people and for the people’. Campaigns can change things after November, we can change things today! We are Americans today and after November! We aren’t campaigning, we should be actively participating in change today.

  • This guy is a hero for speaking out. I think there are strict regulations regarding what you can and can't say when you're in the military and maybe this was the soonest he could speak?

Also, it is much more powerful to write a DETAILED book giving point by point examples of how Bush fucked things up -- then to just give sounds bites as they occur. Had this guy been given a 15min press conference 3 years ago would any of us even remember it? Books are better than sound bites, but they take much longer to write.

If he had quit on day one, then he wouldn't have been in a position to improve things from the inside nor would he have first hand knowledge of what was happening. Better to be a whistleblower with insider knowledge than just be the guy who quit after one week, right?

Had he quit too soon he would have just been stuck giving sound bites on MSNBC and the whole thing would have been blown off (successfully) by the Bush White House. He would have been dismissed as "out of the loop" or "disgruntled" or something.

But by staying in and now coming out with a book -- it's almost impossible for the Bushies to just dismiss him.

I think he made the right call.

  • if he wants to come out and say they LIED i am happy to listen. If he is not digging into the secret Authoritarian cabal behind this CON JOB then very little from either book serves this nation well.

the puppets and the show we see mean very little. it is the puppet masters that must be EXPOSED.

those who want to do that are most welcome, otherwise this is nothing more than attempting to cover their own misguided tail. that is simply not enough and is not acceptable.

  • Gotta hand it to a guy who will sell out his country for a book deal.

    Scum........Pure Scum.

  • Let's not view this too simplistically.

The guy stayed in to try and make things work.

And yet we're now all judging him and saying that if he "cared" about his country he should have just quit after a week and gone home to play video games.

And now that he's trying to come forward with a book detailing what his experiences were -- we're telling him, "Don't bother. Don't wanna hear it."

This guy can't win, can he?

  • It does us no good to shoot the messengers. Perhaps, if we had a mainstream media more interested in investigative reporting rather than Whitehouse limited access, and a Congress more willing to press the Whitehouse for information and more support for those who would speak out against the administration in real time, then we all would have heard the various truths about the numerous failures of this administration sooner than later. But in stead those who would speak against this very unpopular but very wealthy political machine have only had the outlet of off mainstream media or of writing a book. Even then, in each case, they are lambasted for their efforts by the administration - deffermation of character being the m.o. There are, nonetheless, many great books out there all attesting to the overreach, corruption and failure to perform by this administration. My question is how many crimes and misdemeanors does it take to finally make this administration accountable? That Bush and Cheney will finish out their horrific terms of office without being impeached is a gross failure by the other two branches to reign in the executive branch and sets a precedent that is frightening to say the least.

  • Brave?
    How is he brave?

If he is Brave how come he didn't speak up when he wore the uniform?

Now that he is out of uniform and his replacement have shown what an incompetent boob he was he has no choice but to right a "tell all" book because nobody in corporate America will give him a job.

Another coward with a book deal who got his stars through afirmative action.

  • When you are living inside a system that is rotten like most of the USA these days, you do what you have to do to go along with it even though you know it is wrong deep inside. I know that Walmart has immoral policies, I shop at these stores sometimes. I don't lie down in the middle of the floor and start yelling that slave labor was used here..even though I think it. . I pay at the register and move on.

  • What's amazing is that not even Nixon officials turned this quick, it just shows how loathed the Bush Admin. is by it own people.

  • Wow!Are you serious,You mean to tell me that one of George's generals thinks he is a moron too? This guy is soft as the rest of Bushes staff and all the news reporters who are bashing Bush now! The wouldnt have dared do it around the time 9/11 happened. That would have cost them their job for the sake of speaking what they belive!

  • It's easy for those who wear the Bush badge of courage to be cynical, but that doesn't excuse the many abuses of power perpetrated by this administration.

I also agree that Gen. Sanchez, after realizing the impending quagmire, probably, decided to compile the evidence necessary to duely expose the unscrupulous and surreptitious behavior of those who we trusted to be our honorable leaders. At the expense of the American people, they ignored the best interests of those same people and the world, to implement the plan of promoting their own self interests above those who they have vowed to serve and the constitution they swore to uphold. For their failure in the execution of those sworn duties, they deserve to be convicted of the crimes they have commited.

For his service to this country, especially for exposing the corruption at the top levels of our government, Gen, Sanchez deserves the medal of honor and any other medal we can find to pin on him...It's never too late to expose tyranny...how else are we going to get our country back on track..?

  • i would pay good money to see sanchez and alberto gonzales go at it for a few rounds.. (in a debate, of course)

some moron on this thread said something about affirmative action.. this is obviously without any idea who sanchez is or what he has accomplished in his career.. the fact that you see a non-anglican surname and you think "affirmative action" is nothing short of racism.. and the military is about the last place where you will find a policy of promotion based on ethnicity..

and fyi.. if you're going to criticize something, you should at least learn how to spell it..

  • Sanchez did what was best for his men. He was probably aware of the way Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame were being delt with. And would therefore refuse to relinquish his command to an inferior politically motivated officer the administration would have sought out to take his place. Sometimes we must look beyond the simplistic ways used to dismiss tough decisions. You should be proud of men like the General for putting the troops 1st, when so few in the white house do.
