Many have lamented the slow fade of vinyl records. Even if you were born after the rise of the CD, it's easy to get nostalgic about the warm crackle of the spinning turntable or the large-scale beauty of album art. Lower Haters' newest show is a record reconnaissance, bringing vinyl into the digital age without diminishing its traditional pleasures. More than 30 local artists have turned shiny black discs into canvases, flooding the grooves with paint. At the opening, DJs TopCat, Romanowski, and Enki put their vinyl to use the old-fashioned way.

  • This record album will destroy Alderaan: At "Vinyl Apocalypse," local painters find a way to a) pay tribute to the era of the platter, b) keep stuff out of the landfill, and c) make great art, some of which will blow up Princess Leia's home planet. Anything round is an especially good fit for this show, in which all the work starts out as a slab of wax no one wants to play anymore. Jonathan Wakuda Fischer (kind of a suspicious last name for an artist dealing in Star Wars iconography, man) went for it: "They mocked me when I told them of my plans for a hot pink Death Star," he says, and we're guessing "they" are sorry now. Thirty-some other talented artists contribute boob girls, space bugs, goldfish, and more.
