  • Why is this news?
  • @ PoisonTheMonkey - This is news because it illustrates that we, as a culture, still refuse to come to terms with the power of the biological imperatives of our species. (See also "Bikini-clad women make men impatient") The implicit "tut-tuting" re: the fact that the absence of female skeletons may indicate that the women were taken as spoils of war rather than killed elicited a big "Well, Duh." Why destroy a valuable commodity like breeding stock when survival is at stake? It's just biology, folks, it ain't genteel cul-chah.

Camille Paglia has had much to say about this refusal to acknowledge the chthonic forces that drive behavior. Perhaps her most (in)famous - "If civilization had been left in female hands, we would still be living in grass huts."

  • Damn, people in the past were UGLY!!! (gross, past people, gross)
  • Well if women in that age looked like you Tracy I would certainly fight for your honor.
  • News Flash!

The skelletons have been re dated to be circa 1996.

  • It is possible that our lack of understanding of those times and people causes us not to consider that the women killed the men and children. The unthinkable - women killing men and children then and now.

  • Now we will fight for steping on each others shoes. Not much has changed.

  • I think this was reported because it was an unusual find i.e. all the bones buried together. I also think it rather strange that the interpretation of the finding is that they were fighting over women inasmuch as men were the warriors, not women. A grave site like this IMO only indicates there was a battle. It could have been a fight over good hunting grounds, water resources or territory as well as women. What it really tells me is that mankind hasn't changed all that much.

  • Yeah, this is not evidence of men killing over women, at all.

And last time I checked ancient peoples were not the caricatures we paint them to be, let's not forget who built Stonehenge.

    And yeah, what Carlos said.

So what does this prove? That archaeologists, like all people and scientists, are not bullshit proof. You too tracy, I hope this makes you question your hypothesis.

  • The thing is, something like this SHOULD be news...it doesn't seem too good that in this day and age we're still familiar with that whole 'claiming' thing when it comes to women. I mean, it's not like guys and girls should give up their want and lust for one another and all (cause it is pretty hard to shake of nature, and we DO need to 'reproduce' to survive) but is one being mislead in thinking that it could be done without having that lust just turn into another possession? Is it possible to live in harmony with another just for the sake of love and not materialism?
