CUP COMES HOME!
Red Wings hang on to beat Penguins, 3-2
Dana Wakiji / The Detroit News
PITTSBURGH -- The Stanley Cup is coming home to Detroit.
After a disappointing loss in triple overtime in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the Red Wings went to Pittsburgh and finished the job, beating the gritty Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2, at Mellon Arena in Game 6.
The Red Wings started Game 6 off on a much better note than they did in Game 5.
The Red Wings drew first blood, taking a 1-0 first period lead, as Brian Rafalski scored on the power play at 5:03.
Rafalski took a pass from Henrik Zetterberg, who was falling down, and sent the puck over the shoulder of Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.
Pavel Datsyuk also assisted on the goal.
Rafalski, a Dearborn native, has goals in two straight games and has four in the playoffs.
The Wings had to fight hard to keep the lead as Dallas Drake and Kris Draper were both sent to the box, giving the Penguins 1:33 on a two-man advantage.
Once again, Zetterberg provided the boost for the Wings, going down to block a shot during that span.
The Wings added a second goal at 8:07 of the second period. Mikael Samuelsson faked, then took a shot. The rebound came to Valtteri Filppula, who backhanded the puck through Fleury's legs.
Filppula has five goals in the playoffs.
The Penguins finally scored on their fourth power-play opportunity, when Datsyuk was in the box for interference.
Evgeni Malkin, the much-maligned Penguin, scored from the left circle, beating Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood stick-side at 15:26.
Sidney Crosby and Marian Hossa got the assists.
The Red Wings got a bizarre goal in the third period. Henrik Zetterberg shot the puck from the left circle. It ended up behind Fleury, but not in the net. When Fleury tried to sit down and cover it, his rear end shot the puck back into the net. -
The last minute or so was AMAZING hockey-especially the final seconds. Hell, the whole series has been incredible.

This is the ELEVENTH Stanley Cup for the Detroit Red Wings!
-
Not a Hockey fan, but at least they're making up for what the Pistons failed to achieve a few days ago. Thumbs up for the Detroit sport enthusiasts.

Good for Detroit. Congrats. Although I tend to root for the underdog and would have liked to see Pittsburgh win.

When will curling become the international success story that hockey is?

The Wings were the better team, but I thought the Pens played a pretty poor series relative to their ability. There were some great moments...
but I felt terrible for Fleury... that is heart-breaking. He did well to keep his composure for the rest of the game after having it go in like that.
An inch closer and that puck doen't go in like it did, or an in further away it doesn't go in.
Tha't shard to take.
But congrats to Detroit...
There wa a comment about this being their 11th cup... I MUST... as a habs fan ask that you check out the Canadians stats for cup wins. There's another one coming north of the border soon.
See ya next season.-

I do not think the Penguins were all that. Sindy Crosby is so over-rated. It was so difficult to stmach all of the slobbering over Crosby the three NBC commentators were drooling out. Henrik Zetterberg defenitly deserved the Conn Smythe Trophy for his performance in the Cup FInals. Alex Ovechkin, without a doubt, will win the NHL MVP for this season.

THE CUP IS COMING HOME!
The Wings deserved the win after a much better series, however for the Penguins being as young as they are they gave me some heart palpitations.
Pittsburgh will be a powerhouse in the near future.
Detroit needed this... something to bring a city together, to cheer for their team, even if the appreciation for hockey is not nearly as wide spread as basketball.
GO Wings!-

I am saddened the Penns lost even though I could care less about hockey or sports for that matter.

THE CUPS BACK IN THE D!!!
Hats off to the Penguins but their fans were a little disrespectful at the end of the game!
Oh!
And the Wings' fans chanting "We Want A Cup!" wasn't very cool either!
I support Detroit sport....beside the lions! -
As someone who was raised in Detroit, let me tell you that Detroit is a place that desperately needs something to cheer about. Congradulations to all Red Wings fans you certainly deserve this!
-
no matter how often ESPN tries to tell you that hockey is dead. that doesn't mean it is true. hockey is a tremendous sport and it will never die!
being a flyers fan, i'm glad that the wings stopped cindy crosby from getting to that cup. i never wanna see him win it.-

It was a wicked series. The Pens were dominated for most of it but somehow just stayed close, even up to the final seconds of the last game last night.
I have to say, as a long time hockey player/fan, this was one of the best playoff and finals I've seen in awhile.
Watch out for the flyers next year, they came out of nowhere and will be a force to reckon with...-

Next season it will be the Washington Capitals all the way!!! Pittsburg might make the play-offs, but they will be no match for Alex Ovechkin and the rest of the Capitals.

I'm late responding, but,...
"Let's go Vred Vinks,... let's go!"
Hockeytown has risen again! Everyone jumped off the Wings' wagon (and hockey itself) and latched on to the Tigers (TWO championships in 41 years)!
The Red Wings have been great for twenty years, winning the Cup four of those years (FOUR championships in 11 years). This is a continent spreading sport, and fans like myself are living it up with the cup!
Congrats Wings, Lidstrom, Babcock, Zetterberg, Drake,... and congrats Detroit!
