"Photographer and filmmaker Veena Rao re-visits her now retired second grade teacher and her over 2,000 dolls who all live together in a vinyl sided house in an "active adult community" deep in the heart of suburban Illinois. Via her dolls, who are all named, dressed and positioned all over the house and in every inch of her basement turned doll museum, we learn about the evolution of girls and society."

  • Dolls can be a great investment. Of course it depends on the maker and condition of the dolls...But you have to not allow yourself to become obsessive/compulsive.They are after all dolls!

  • Her point on how the Barbie has changed girl's outlooks on their physical appearance is so true. All of her dolls look well fed and fully clothed. it's interesting how a toy as simple as a baby doll may have had such a profound effect on young girls so as to over decades shape their mind frame on what is proper body image.
This teacher haunts me in a sort of melancholy and sad way. The void of no kids, for her, is being filled by having hundreds upon hundreds of dolls. And yet it seems okay, and as though she wouldn't have it any other way.

  • This made me feel sad for this wonderful retired teacher who never had any children; who was only able to invest her love and compassion into dolls. It was a little strange how she was caressing the dolls hand as if it was real, sad and strange...

  • very good video veena. i like how it really brings mrs. henderson to life. and she really stepped out of her comfort zone by showing her vulnerabilities when she read that poem for you out loud. that's a sign of good interviewing :-)

  • CREEEEEPY! This is too close to one of the most chilling episodes of the original Twilight Zone I ever saw, “Living Doll”. Remember Talking Tina? Also, Night Gallery’s “The Doll” was pretty scary. Ah the good old days, when TV could really terrify you with a creative script, simple story & slightly off kilter characters without any of today’s lame special effects. Anyhow, I’d like to hear from any of her former students as to what she was really like & how you remember her.
