Witnesses say the Colombo bus targeted in the latest in a series of assaults by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels was 'shredded by shrapnel' and the floor was 'covered in blood and debris'. At least 22 people were killed by the attacks today in Sri Lanka, as remotely-controlled roadside bombs targeted the country's transport system.
The first attack, in the capital Colombo, was carried out during rush hour, killing 20 and wounding 64. The second explosion targeted a bus in major town Polgolla.
Attacks blamed on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have stepped up since the military began a fresh push against rebel territory in the north and east of the country, where the Tigers are fighting for an independent state. The group usually denies involvement in such attacks, but were not available for comment.

Anguish and pain.
"Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind." -- Albert Einstein.
I can't even begin to think of something worth killing innocent people over. A point is no longer valid when innocent lives are taken. -

well said Jammer, well said.
It just seems so pointless, what did these people do to deserve it? -
In civilised society this does not make sense, but these people are extremists. The rebels are fighting to become an independent state, something we will not be able to understand. Innocent victims are another way to draw attention to their plight. A terrible event, beyond comprehension from my office chair.

I do kind of understand why people turn to violence in order to try an convey a message, but surely there's got to be a better way...?

Unfortunately this conflict looks set to continue, the origins of the war are decades old and with terrorism used as a tactic it is very difficult for any one side to win.
You can read about the conflict on wikipedia, just be careful when taking it all in - these conflicts are fought in cyberspace as well as in the streets.-

This human sacrifice for the sake of a piece of land is centuries old, so much so, it makes me wonder if it's inbuilt in us. Even if it is, unfortunately so is grief. Sad news.

I wonder the same thing sometimes, about the inevitability of fighting over land. I often think of Ishmael and the concept of takers and leavers, and whether or not we can ever find a way to coexist on this planet. The legacy mankind has left of colonialism has scarred our history so badly for so long, I personally doubt that we will ever be able to do such a thing.
It makes me very sad at heart to think of that, but I think its inevitable as I believe we have surpassed the carrying capacity of our home already. My heart goes out to those who are victimized by these atrocities.
