Summer jobs for teenagers? Outlook not so good. Due to the deterioration of the national labor market, the fall of the teen job market has accelerated.
Nearly half of the companies that usually provide hourly employment to teens, like retailers and restaurants, are not planning to hire any new seasonal employees for 2008. To make matters worse, all of the old folks will be vying for any jobs that are available.
Better bust out your lawnmowers, it's gonna be a hard summer!

Would they do those jobs that people claim Americans don't do so that's why having Mexicans are a gift from across the border?
Probably.
There are people to do the jobs that people so eagerly want only a certain race to be able to do. -
old people at Paramount's Great America, Raging Waters, and other theme parks are always so serious, while teenagers running the rides usually have more of a skip in what they're doing.
same goes with places like In 'n Out burger. Most of these places are run by people around 18-22, and they do a crackin job, but when my friends and I went to a peculiar In 'n Out that had much older people working there, our orders took longer and were wrong...
I don't mean to sound ageist, but I mean common, its the crude truth. as most of us get older, we lose enthusiasm, and the younger crop is much more energetic.
I don't think I ever heard a young employee yell "STOP RUNNING!!!!" you know... because running is so dangerous these days... -
Time to get creative.
-
This is the point where they figure out the only way to make good money these days is selling drugs. That market is one that will never crash.

I've applied at soooo many places this summer. I'm technically a "seasonal worker" (on summer break from college), so it's been almost impossible to find a job. I might as well just start slingin' some meth lol
-
nope. bs. a person who can't find a job in this country is just a person who doesn't really want one or expects something out of their league. sorry but this is incredibly incorrect.
-
Out of my league? You can't be serious. How is applying to clean shit off restaurant tables out of anyone's league? I maybe be an overly ambitious, slightly naive, college student, but don't tell me that a minimum wage job is out of my league.
-
Lots of young kids need tutors. Possibly not that much money, but that's a doable one.

Teens were lined up in droves for jobs at The Mall Of America, a place they'd much rather just hang out at this Summer, I'm sure.
-
Look to the Indian Casinos. They hire anyone.

The fact that seasonal jobs are not readily available is something that should not be overlooked, yet more emphasis should be place on the work ethic of those who currently have jobs. People do not know how to work hard anymore, thus give jobs to kids who actually will work for the money.

This is a pretty big issue where i live. If you didn't get a jobs before school let out, it's was almost impossible to find a job now.

In 'Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything', Steven D. Levitt proves that the pyramid structure of petty street drug dealers is NOT a better alternative to the minimum wage job inside the McDonalds some kids may find themselves dealing drug in front of when you consider benefits such as health insurance and stock options however seemingly insignificant. A good work ethic over time always beats the false allure of fast money.
Now, if you don't mind, I need to go make some fast money.
"Here's a twenty bucks, kid. Go buy yourself some more money."-

There are over 10,000 available nonprofit/NGO jobs and 1300 internships available at Idealist.org.
Maybe the kids should start thinking about doing well by doing good?-

Aw damn, I'm screwed.

Even for those of us that live in small towns with hometown businesses, they don't hire either. It ridiculous. The closest actual 'city' is 15 miles away and I don't have a car. I'm not sure driving over there everyday would even quite be worth it. I'd just be working for gas money.

We are going to have to start being more creative in the ways that we make money. The best jobs for the upcoming generation are going to be the ones where you have to come up with ideas and use creativity. You can't teach a computer to do that.

I had this same problem last summer. I must have filled out at least 50 applications and not one place would hire me. And none of these places were 'out of my league', mostly food service, department stores, supermarkets, etc.
What a shitty situation for kids these days, especially with college coming.-

Oh man, how am I gonna be able to afford college now? This problem's already ravaged my community, with factories and other big business leaving left and right, the only place left is walmart, and that's filled with senior citizens. Hmn, wonder what illegal shenanigans I can get into for cash?
-
Yeah. I'm sure that a lack of jobs for kids this summer will cause lots of issues with the law.
I mean, seriously, no matter what we say, we get into trouble if we aren't occupied with a job or at school... it's just a common fact.
Lots of teens in my town are getting umpiring jobs, and though it pays well for the amount of work it is... i'd suggest that.
Either way, it might turn around next year. We can tough it out one summer.-

I'm one of the lucky ones who had a job to come back to this summer after college let out. But I have tons of friends who are jobless and applying and interviewing daily but they keep getting passed over for people who won't just be seasonal.

uhm most kids dont blow their money on useless things. granted, i cant say i wont, because i really just keep buying food. but still, for example, id like to save up for a car, and other things. Everyone likes money, and even if we do buy wii games and such, so what? it's better than asking our parents all the time
-
go work at chuck E cheese.
go throw some newspapers around -
oh the beauty of being a nanny--they will always be needed (well, in la that is....)
-
In my town of about 8,000 teens don't want to work. Want big bucks to do nothing.
