Why women voters didn't make Hillary win

"One of the Democratic campaign's great misperceptions has been that Clinton held an overwhelming advantage among women voters. But that isn't the case. As expected, Clinton captured the over-65 vote, and Obama won over younger women. But women in the middle split almost evenly between the two. And while both Senators boasted historic candidacies, Obama's seemed to resonate more deeply, translating into 70%, 80% and even 90% of the black vote in primary contests. No one expected Clinton to sweep 90% of Democratic women voters, but 60% wouldn't have been an unreasonable accomplishment for the first woman to have a serious chance of winning the presidency. Instead, Clinton won just over a majority of women's votes.

So what does that mean? Clinton and her supporters have charged that sexism is responsible for her loss of the nomination. But it seems more likely that women themselves cost her the nod. The reasons more women haven't voted for Clinton tell us something about the evolution of feminism and what the future may hold for female politicians ..."

  • As a woman, I found it pretty sexist for a woman to expect my support just because I too am a woman. I don't accuse Hillary of this. However, her misguided surrogates are terribly guilty of that sentiment. They went so far as to question a woman's feminism any time they ran across a woman supporting a candidate who wasn't Hillary. I was personally put off by that. After all, a vote for any other candidate was neither technically nor necessarily a vote against Hillary.

  • Speaking of this, I didn't personally know very many, if any, men who voted for Hillary in the primaries. I find that interesting.

  • Well, as a woman I voted for her not based on gender but on her policies and intelligence. Most Obama supporters did vote for him on the basis of race. And just to be clear most women I know voted Hillary and so did my husband and many men that I know. It doesn't matter if you want to acknowledge it or not, sexism exists and it seems clear to women who know sexism. It isn't our fought that these "girls" are too dumb to know what women's suffrage is. I mean please the man show did a stunt and asked girls to sign a petition to stop women's suffrage and they did! BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER!

  • Any voter who votes for an opposing candidate of Hillary just because they're angry are obviously sexist--they were only supporting Hillary the WOMAN, not Hillary and her policies.
  • "Most Obama supporters did vote for him on the basis of race."

dcrc9596, what source told you that most obama supporters voted for him on the basis of race? Don't pass your personal opinion as fact. You're offending many Obama supporters thinking that they would vote for any candidate that was black. Thats as offensive as saying most people that voted for Hillary did so because she was a woman. If Will Smith was running for President, do you really think he would have had the exact same support as Obama? People from every gender and race have shown their support for him. He isn't the first black candidate to run for President. But he is the first black candidate that will win.
