The U.S. agency focused on the condition of the oceans says the Caribbean monk seal has gone extinct.
The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Services has confirmed what many biologists have long suspected: the only subtropical seal native to the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico is extinct. It also warns that the Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals could be next.
The last confirmed sighting of the Caribbean monk seal was in 1952 at Seranilla Bank, between Jamaica and the Yucatan Peninsula.
Biologists say humans left the population unsustainable after over hunting them.
Today, there are fewer than 1,200 Hawaiian and 500 Mediterranean monk seals remaining.

This is just sad...hopefully it will give some awareness to the cause of endangered animals. Too many people think that endangered animals aren't actually in danger. Maybe this will wake them up.

Sad news. Here's a link to the AP article for more info.

Bad news first thing on a Saturday morning.

For those who think pollution and global warming are not problems to be reckoned with, this is a tiny wake up call. Extinctions happen all the time, now what will we plan to do about them?
-
Sad sad news, but it's just nature in any way you look at it. Sooner or later, the world will just go into one of it's cycles and a whole new line of life will evolve after everything dies.

Go Vegan, though it might not seem to matter much, your local actions have global impacts.
Humans, we can be a virus and a cancer, or we can be the solution.-

Okay... how will this affect the local/global ecology? Will it at all? If it doesn't, I don't care.

i'm kind of glad. less food goes into some seals mouth then mine. i need help with the grocery bill.

It is really sad how many species are going extinct because of our behavior. We aren't being very nice, intelligent or responsible with our environment. At some point it will catch up with us.
-
I sincerely hope we're not next on the list.
-
The market-based perspective says there was no future profits in caribbean monk seals anyway. One could possibly create a market for these seals as a high end delicacy, but the time and effort required to do so would far outweigh the potential profitability.

We need to start taking genetic samples of all animals so that in the future when we are more in tune with our environment we can clone them and bring them back.

How do we take action! We need to do something, we can't just sit here. I mean what's next? This isn't right... -amber
