Is Obama an enlightened being?

I find I'm having this discussion, this weird little debate, more and more, with colleagues, with readers, with liberals and moderates and miserable, deeply depressed Republicans and spiritually amped persons of all shapes and stripes and I'm having it in particular with those who seem confused, angry, unsure, thoroughly nonplussed, as they all ask me the same thing: What the hell's the big deal about Obama?

I, of course, have an answer. Sort of.

Warning: If you are a rigid pragmatist/literalist, itchingly evangelical, a scowler, a doubter, a burned-out former '60s radical with no hope left, or are otherwise unable or unwilling to parse alternative New Age speak, click away right now, because you ain't gonna like this one little bit.

Ready? It goes likes this:

Barack Obama isn't really one of us. Not in the normal way, anyway.

This is what I find myself offering up more and more in response to the whiners and the frowners and to those with broken or sadly dysfunctional karmic antennae - or no antennae at all - to all those who just don't understand and maybe even actively recoil against all this chatter about Obama's aura and feel and MLK/JFK-like vibe.

Spiritual wise ones say: This sure ain't no ordinary politician. You buying it?

To them I say, all right, you want to know what it is? The appeal, the pull, the ethereal and magical thing that seems to enthrall millions of people from all over the world, that keeps opening up and firing into new channels of the culture normally completely unaffected by politics?

No, it's not merely his youthful vigor, or handsomeness, or even inspiring rhetoric. It is not fresh ideas or cool charisma or the fact that a black president will be historic and revolutionary in about a thousand different ways. It is something more. Even Bill Clinton, with all his effortless, winking charm, didn't have what Obama has, which is a sort of powerful luminosity, a unique high-vibration integrity.

Dismiss it all you like, but I've heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who've been intuitively blown away by Obama's presence - not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence - to say it's just a clever marketing ploy, a slick gambit carefully orchestrated by hotshot campaign organizers who, once Obama gets into office, will suddenly turn from perky optimists to vile soul-sucking lobbyist whores, with Obama as their suddenly evil, cackling overlord. . .

But there simply is no denying that extra kick. As one reader put it to me, in a way, it's not even about Obama, per se. There's a vast amount of positive energy swirling about that's been held back by the armies of BushCo darkness, and this energy has now found a conduit, a lightning rod, is now effortlessly self-organizing around Obama's candidacy. People and emotions and ideas of high and positive vibration are automatically drawn to him. It's exactly like how Bush was a magnet for the low vibrational energies of fear and war and oppression and aggression, but, you know, completely reversed. And different. And far, far better.

Don't buy any of it? Think that's all a bunch of tofu-sucking New Agey bulls-- and Obama is really a dangerously elitist political salesman whose inexperience will lead us further into darkness because, when you're talking national politics, nothing, really, ever changes? I understand. I get it. I often believe it myself.

Not this time.

  • We totally buy it as well.

I will submit that people look to him and see themselves. They see how good they can be. They see how grounded the can be. While I still think real change is hard for many to grasp in their own lives they see the hope for change and the hope that they can understand and have the courage to change. Can we carry this mantra within ourselves? Be the change you want to see in the world. Be it! He makes into words what we hope to be. Let's be it. And let's keep asking him to be that change with us.

  • Have you ever gone to a meeting at work or what ever and at the end of it the speaker asks "Do you have any questions?" Nobody says anything. The one or two people will ask questions. As your walking away others say I was going to ask that. Well Obama is one of those people that will ask and say what most people just think about and he means it.
He is one culturally cool dude.

  • Mr. Morford is trying to define that "It" in Obama that makes me care about the political process again in a positive, hopeful way. 8 years of distrust and disgust damn near ruined it.
Sen. Obama has restored my faith in the potential for quality leadership that the world can embrace.
    That's quite an accomplishment.
I will acknowledge and respect this by giving the man a chance.

  • I don't know exactly what it is but it is coming through loud and clear and is positive.
  • There is a certain mentality that many people see in Obama. It's very evident when he speaks and the way he has deflected the personal attacks throughout this campaign. Asking if Obama is an enlightened being is a fair question. However, it depends on what your definition of enlightenment actually is. Rather then calling it enlightenment I think it's more like "getting it." People who "get it" understand that life is a beautiful thing and it is a lot of hard work. They also see the vast expanse of human potential and how much better our life can be if we apply our full potential with a lot of hard work. He is one of these people and I’d like to think that there are many more Americans, like this, who will vote him into office. It will be an amazing thing to see if he can make other people see the country for what it truly can be.

  • very interesting article, very interesting responses.
One of the most important disclaimers he makes before proceeding is to those who "are otherwise unable or unwilling to parse alternative New Age speak", a group to which I formerly subscribed.

I grew up in New England, so I don't throw around words like "lightworker" - but I think i've learned to parse this language into something I understand.

  • samanthadian, Yes, you said it very well. I was thinking it but not able to put it into words. You did, and a nice job of it.
  • For Obama to have started the race and made a commitment to not taking contributions from corporations or special interests, it shows that he had alot of faith in the American people, confidence and honesty. If that isn't enlightenment nowadays, what is?

  • I agree with Chique and the other's comments.

I'd add that we should realize that who and what Obama is is as much an outgrowth of our collective discontent, hopes, fear and aspirations as Obama himself.

From my perspective, he is unique in that with tremendous faith he has stepped into the political arena with the desire to affect positive change with compassion for others.

The strength and perspective provided by real faith (as opposed to the fained faith of the likes of Bush and mccain) provides one understanding and compassion for the fallibility and individual life journey of everyone without the need to judge and condemn is infectious for sure.

It's the big heart that says it's better to love than to kill.

  • i agree with the statement that he's not like the typical individual: intelligent, eloquent, and empathetic (or so he seems that way)

  • I can't believe the crazy! He can't even have a conversation without a script but you think he is a GOD????? OKAY, WELL we all see now who is voting for Obama and why. I personally won't drink the kool aid. But have fun, with Jim Jones, I mean Barack Obama, sorry.
Has anyone read the bill he supported about abortion and if the baby survives kill it when it is born, and he voted yes. Sounds enlightened to me, infanticide should have known that was how to be a diety!
