A spokeswoman for the Phoenix Mars Lander mission says a hacker took over the mission's public Web site during the night and changed its lead news story.
A mission update posted Friday was replaced with a hacker's signature and a link redirecting visitors to an overseas Web site.
The site hosted by the University of Arizona has been taken off line while computer experts work to correct the problem.
The Mars Lander vehicle touched down on the Red Planet last Sunday to search for traces of organic compounds that are the basic building blocks of life.

hacking UofA my friend, is a lot easier than hacking NASA.
I love it when university computers get hacked. They teach an entire major in computer science and they never expect the graduate students to play a little. -
Hacking NASA is like declaring war on Iran- oh wait...

yeah, that Wash Post site is a hoot... it opens with an annoying ad, and if you click on "feedback" at the top of the ad banner, it closes the page.
that's how to make friends.... -
Props to who was able to.

It has a picture of the guy who hacked it. -
Why would you want to hack something like this?
-
You click on latest news and it takes you to some european bestiality site
-
Of all the things they could have done when they hacked that site. What happened to the fake alien? What about the low-quality, shaky 'live' video apparently showing evidence of life? Even Elvis dancing on Mars would have been great.
But oh no, just a hacker's signature and a hyperlink. Poor show! -
Although I usually find hackers antics cheeky and fun- this was just plain stupid.

Ironically, most hackers of major websites end up getting jobs with the government, helping them devise new ways to prevent such skilled attacks.
So maybe this guy was just looking for some extra cash? -
This is one of the many reasons why you cant trust anything on the internet, hackers are too good humored :-)

This looks like a plain computer cracker showing what he is capable of. This was more of a claim to fame, than malicious intent.
