this reminds me of what Barack said in his Pennsylvania race speech, that the union "can always be perfected". that Rev. Wright's mistake was speaking about race as if it were "static, as if nothing had changed."
This is in line with Buddhist philosophy too, that change is constant, not just defined by the achievement of landmarks but by the process of getting to them.-
