From the report: This spring, an employee intending to order a special CD-DVD edition of R.E.M.'s latest release "Accelerate" inadvertently entered the "LP" code instead. Soon boxes of the big, vinyl discs showed up at several stores.
Some sent them back. But a handful put them on the shelves, and 20 LPs sold the first day.

  • Let me tell you from experience.. record collecting is neat and I love the touch of a vinyl record - but when you have to move you start to reconsider the whole endeavor ;)

That said... this is sort of like the last flash of light before a total eclipse of the sun... all physical media, be it records, tapes, cd's or 8-tracks, is going the way of the dodo in this digital age.

  • vinyls aren't going extinct at all. there are still being produced and many artists and fans find them to be of higher value and sound quality. With their release of In Rainbows, Radiohead proved that even if you give away music for free in digital format, people still want something physically tangible. Not to mention the artwork that goes hand in hand with every album ever released, it's just as much a part of the package as the music itself.

  • Many independent labels and bands press their music on vinyl and have been doing so even when other forms of media took precedence. Possibly because more independent bands have been picked up by the mainstream, major record labels have begun selling vinyl releases, and large retailers now see an opportunity in making vinyl available.
