Bowing to pressure from Monsanto and the agro-toxics industry, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced May 21 that it plans to eliminate pesticide reporting at National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The program has tracked national pesticide use and provided critical information for consumer groups, scientists, farmers and environmental groups monitoring pesticide use and hazards.. NASS' elimination of the Agricultural Chemical Use Database is a direct attack on consumers and farmworkers' Right to Know about pesticide residues and food safety. Pesticide reporting has become particularly important in the last ten years with Genetically Engineered crops requiring more and more pesticides.

in eugene oregon there was a small protest with some teens in bio suits who were against pesticides in food and all they got were police tazers and jail time.
(next time without the bio suits guys) -
wow, how misguided has our government become? leave it to the bush admin appointees to take even further steps back. whatever happened to protecting the consumer? instead we just give them a free pass to poison our food and not even tell us. This feels like an episode from the Twilight ZONE.

Monsanto is so evil.
-
They're eliminating if for obvious reasons; as the economy is going to shit, they are going to do whatever it takes to maximize profits, even if they have to sacrifice the society's and environment's safety.

If this is true, it is tragic. It's kindof hard to boycott food isnt it?? Not for people in outer suburban or sub-rural areas. Grow your own, buy your neighbors. Which South Carolinian needs Californian lettuce for a salad??
First this, next...well... you know...

This is outrageous... There's enough lack of labeling and disclosure, this is going way too far. Boycott regular grocery stores and buy local and certified organic!

I wonder how they're going to blow this one off as 'protecting the people'. Maybe this is their idea of a contraceptive, "Now you won't even be ABLE to have kids! Isn't it great?"

watch this comment being used hereIsn't this what we're criticising China for? For refusing to protect their own citizens from the poisons and pollution the government allows the local industry to spew out?

What is it with Monsanto??!?! First, they maneuver to control the use of their own non-propagating seeds, and now this!!!
I hope we all continue to shine a Very Bright Spotlight on all their Evil Acts. -
Thanks for letting corporations get away with more disease and lingering toxic murder Mr. Bush. I guess this will be article 36 for Congressman Dennis Kucinich.

My garden in growing in nicely!
FUCK YOU MONSANTO!!!!! -
Violence towards nature is the ame as violence towards ourselves. there are many natural and un-natural ways to control insects and pests. Natural and in harmony with nature is better.
-
Now we can freely spray our Genetically Modified Foods with pesticides and no one has to be informed of either atrocity...
The blind leading the blind. -
Boy, the last 8 years gave really brought into crystal clear focus just how "effective" the Conservative philosophy of "no government" really is.
Every single year these guys (who inexplicably have a psychopathic hatred for any kind of government safety standards or oversight) have worked and worked to make life for American citizens worse and worse.
I'm beginning to think these guys actually have a love affair with cancer!
Every single time anyone anywhere tries to reduce the amount of diseased beef, tainted water or (in this case) keep a closer eye on the amount of toxic pesticides being used they go hysterical and try to kill the idea.
Wouldn't a better idea be for these guys to just set up a commune wherein they can eat all the diseased meat they want, drink all the polluted water they want -- and leave the rest of us alone? If they want to kill themselves with cancer causing chemicals, fine, but why force the rest of us to eat, drink and breath pollution?
We could set aside special reservations for them to live on and they could create their unqiue Conservative Communes where they can live totally "free" lives with no government intrusion (or protection) whatsoever. They can run around naked, paying zero taxes and guzzling toxic drinking water all day long and pass their evenings measuring their tumors.
It would be a Conservative Paradise!
And the once we get them isolated from normal society then we can get to work cleaning up the air, water and food supply for the rest of the country without them trying to block everything. -

I got a reply this morning from NASS / USDA and it's SCARY...
Here it is:
Good morning,
Thank you for your message regarding the NASS agricultural chemical use data collection program. USDA and the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) are committed to providing timely, accurate, and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture. However, limited resources – combined with escalating survey expenses and increasing staff costs – have eroded NASS’s annual survey budget over the last decade. This resulted in necessary adjustments to NASS programs, including a decision to collect chemical use data on a rotational basis.
In fiscal years (FY) 2004 through 2006, NASS received appropriated funding from Congress to support existing programs. Some of these funds were used to continue the rotation pattern for chemical use statistics. However, additional program reductions were necessary to ensure high quality statistics were being produced for all reports published by NASS.
NASS reviewed and prioritized its entire data collection program based on the following criteria:
· Principal Economic Indicator data;
· Data that directly impact the market;
· Data necessary to implement USDA programs that provide payments to farmers and are used to administer the farm safety net for producers; and
· Data for which there are no other sources of information available.
Based on the need to redirect funds in accordance with the priority listing above, the decision was made to further curtail the NASS chemical use program beginning in FY 2007. Current funding will only allow a very limited number of commodities to be surveyed each year. Current plans are to be able to collect data for specific crops every 5 or 6 years. Many other commodities will be much less frequent.
NASS will not conduct any agricultural chemical usage surveys on crops produced in 2008. However, under a cooperative agreement with Economic Research Service NASS plans to collect wheat nutrient and pesticide data as part of the 2009 Agricultural Resource Management Survey and plans to publish this data in May 2010.
NASS is committed to working with the agricultural community to identify funding sources and in the absence of increased funding, set commodity rotation priorities for future limited surveys.
