  • The Humane Society of the United States reports that:

"According to the FAO, deforestation for farm animal production is responsible for 2.4 billion tonnes of CO2 per year.[18] A 2004 Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) report stated that the total area of forest lost increased from 41.5 million hectares in 1990 to 58.7 million hectares in 2000. In just ten years, an area twice the size of Portugal was lost, most of it to pasture for farm animal production. In June 2005, the FAO predicted that by 2010, more than 1.2 million hectares of forest in Central America and 18 million hectares in South America will disappear due in large part to clearing land for grazing cattle."

Your burger had to come from somewhere. It just so happened to be the Amazon.
  • paper towel anyone? fuck you, fuck me, fuck them, we're all fucked. we keep fucking ourselves and the environment. let's all have fucken kids, to INCREASE the consumption of trees, oil, and food.

    overpopulated retards we are!
  • It looks like someone took a picture of the amazon and then used paint to white out two weird shapes.

You have to choose your battles with the environment. Is this this one worth fighting for? Because if you fight for this one you'll miss another one that might just be more important.

There's so much that sucks that's going on that you can't fight everything.

Trees are important and they do help with the CO2 problem that is being promoted to death. They are also really awesome forest that people have some sort of odd affinity for.

I wonder how much of the forest grows back. I know the way people thinks it work that once you mess with them they never grow back, but maybe that has been misguided. So many things people know have been......but then again maybe it's just fact.

It's too trying to care so much for so many things. Trees have fallen (pun intended) to the bottom of my list. I care, but I've decided not to put that much effort because I don't have a lot of energy left for this type of stuff.

    Stupid people.

Apocalypse 2012 doesn't seem like a story cooked up by looney people anymore with the rate of shit that's happening around the world.

We have a problem with too much CO2 in the air; what do we do? Destroy the best filters of CO2 on this planet. Well done humans, you are truly smarter than all the other animals.

  • Worse, we should look who are the ones buying all that wood on the Market! Then you will find where the trail of destruction originates.

  • Unbelievable and undeniable.

We are killing 'our' only planet faster
than we know how to fix it.

  • It seems nothing is stopping them to destroy LIVE. There's such a diversity of species that we can still easily discover new ones. With this search engine powered by Yahoo in colaboration with Aquaverde, you can help planting tress back in Amazon.

  • if they are cutting down the trees and using the land to graze cattle and other animals...

lets just eat less of those animals. i'll admit i like meat and i won't stop eating it, but i've started eating less and less meat. maybe if more people did that (if they did not want to go vegitarian) there would be less need to raise so many CO2 causing animals.

then again, they are also planting soy....which is what alot of non-meat eaters thrive on...

hm what a pickle we've gotten ourselves into.

  • I think its time the US or UN take action since its obvious the Brazilian government (corrupt as it is) hasnt done much to help. We have good reason to intervene anyways, afterall this deforestation hurts the entire world.

the solution all has to start with each one of us buying less, consuming less, and stopping the mentality of the throw away society in which we live.

  • Stop cutting down so many trees! First, 240 tons of marijuana gone to waste in Afghanistan, now this in the Amazon. What's next?

  • If you're all so mad and you eat meat, you're a walking contradiction. Meat production is quite possibly the largest contributor to global warming, deforestation, food shortage, and water shortage.

Do some research, and PUT DOWN THE BURGER!

  • For real, quit eating beef!

I am not a vegetarian of any kind, but I have cut out beef in my diet because of the environmental concerns. We need to boycott fast food places that are selling 1 dollar hamburgers. Have you ever realized that the true costs are way, way higher?

  • Booooo! I truly hate that this happened. But what I hate even more are articles like this that don't say who's responsible. And who believes that the government was unaware? Pure rubbish!!
    derk
  • I have to ask why companies and/or potential farmers do this?

Most of the woods harvested from rain forests are not very suitable for carpentry, and the soil of the rain forests doesn't hold much nutrients. After a couple of years of growing crops on rain forest soil the soil will become barren and incapable of supporting plants. The only reason that such dense forests can grow on the soil of rain forests is because the plants are constantly feeding on decomposing organic matter from previous generations of what is mostly plant life.

  • This is a time bomb ticking away. It's not just the forest,or the cows.Global warming is so much more complicated than this. All together, though, it is just a matter of time before we are all screwed.

  • yeah, air is overrated anyways, lets cut them all down and dry our hards and asses with soft paper tissue.
I wish it would affect more people in the US, that way, they would probably complain, oh wait, gas is almost 5 bucks, no complains, keep on cutting charlie!!
BTW, not only they cut the trees, they also kill the natives that live in the jungle to take over it. "humans are a virus, nothing else.."
    databaze
  • This is dispicable. No, dispicable doesn't come close. The natives, the trees, the animals and insects.

    I'm at a loss for words ...
