The new machines have provoked worries among passengers and rights activists. "People have no idea how graphic the images are," Barry Steinhardt, director of the technology and liberty program at the American Civil Liberties Union, said.

  • What!? They see us as if we are wearing Comando? That's simply wrong,

  • And how is this going to be for those that are famous? Now their photos will be up on the web. They are not suppose to be connected to the web, as I've read elsewhere, but they will be.

As for us who are not famous it's eerie to even think that someone is seeing what some may have never show to anyone. It's like rape. You're being forced to be seen nude without being asked if it's alright and you're paying a HIGHER price to fly.

They're plundering us and we're taking it.

  • Whilst the idea behind this is great, the execution is terrible.

    Why not have this instead:
You step into the machine and it scans your image into a processor.
From the photo above you can see that metallic objects contrast well with skin; if we have image recognition technology sophisticated enought to read license plates then the processor can recognise suspect areas and display those to you and the officer manning the station. You will be instructed to remove all metallic objects so that the machine does't pick them up. This way if you have nothing on you then the officer won't see anything. You would still get problems with pacemakers and other implants, but then I am sure that you could have a doctor's certificate for them and the machine could recognise when an object is near sexual organs and not reveal the image unless the passenger cannot prove that the object is what they say it is.

  • This is so creepy. I travel a lot and the thought that I'm being exposed in this way is very disturbing. People should definitely be informed of this because maybe then some changes can be made.

  • This is not a job that normal people would enjoy. If you are the person at the airport who has to look at this thing, you are going to be seeing, fat people, old people, people with serious physical deformities, etc.

  • Not everyone is fat, though.

  • while i don't agree with the supposition that this is like rape, i do feel that it is a violation.

don't metal detectors do a pretty good job of finding guns?

  • Not to worry, only the most attractive will be screened, and most in the US are overweight!

  • This is the answer for my projects.... i am so glad that they did that because i just want to make sure that Osama Bin Laden is not a girl but a man.

  • While it allows the security screeners -- looking at the images in a separate room -- to clearly see the passenger's sexual organs as well as other details of their bodies, the passenger's face is blurred, TSA said in a statement on its website.

The scan only takes seconds and is to replace the physical pat-downs of people that is currently widespread in airports.

TSA began introducing the body scanners in airports in April, first in the Phoenix, Arizona terminal.

The installation is picking up this month, with machines in place or planned for airports in Washington (Reagan National and Baltimore-Washington International), Dallas, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Miami and Detroit.

That slightly makes it better.....because they don't really KNOW who it is...but still uncomfortable.

It so doesn't feel right at all.

  • It seems that the outrage is that we will be turned into weird blue Lucien Freud renderings.

  • This is ridiculous. I'm definitely not for it - at all.

  • I personally don't care too much about it; later on in the Yahoo! article, the TSA says it's merely an alternative to getting pat-down, so if you don't want the security guards to see your goodies, then you can always opt out.

Although, I can totally see why something like this would feel so 'invasion of privacy-y'

It's like free porn for the security.

  • I also uploaded the same article yesterday as well haha

  • I would say this counts as crossing the line. Only consenting adults should be scanned in this manner. Personally, I would prefer the scan to a pat down. Let them see a crappy computer scanned image, but please don't touch me.
