Ireland in crunch EU treaty vote

People in the Irish Republic are voting in a referendum on whether to ratify the European Union reform treaty, in a poll anxiously watched across the EU.

All other 26 member states have left the issue to their parliaments, but Ireland is obliged to hold a popular vote on changes to its constitution.

All of the main Irish parties back the treaty but the No campaign has been putting up a strong challenge.

With many voters undecided, opinion polls suggest the result will be close.

The document, known as the Lisbon Treaty, replaces a more ambitious draft constitution that was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Democracy at work, a constitution to protect it's citizens and dicisions on Europe put to the people.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Get in there Ireland !

  • Reuters reports that the latest opinion poll (carried out by pollster Red C) showed that the opponents of the Lisbon treaty were 'gaining ground' but that those in favour were still 'slightly ahead.'

  • At least the people of Ireland live in the kind of democracy that gives them a say, we in England don’t have a democratic system that allows the people to have an opinion in-between elections.

  • Well I voted no, for many reasons.

The yes side try to say all no campaigners Anti E.U, racist, ultra Nationalistic or right wing Catholics.

i'm none of those things, I love the E.U. but this is not the path i want it to go down.

The Yes politicians admitted not having read the whole thing, have not explained why to vote yes bar the "well the EU has been good" line.

The yes side have been pathetic, and i say that as a member of Labour who are on the Yes side...
