Ireland rejects the Lisbon reform treaty of Europe

Ireland, sometimes I love you.
Lisbon has been defeated, it would have been ratified by 26/27 EU countries but needs all 27 to accept it to pass.
Ireland is the ONLY country having a referendum on the issue.
Our constitution says it's a must.

The no side, demonised by the yes, accused of being anti EU, racist,i solationist, Ultra nationalist and Right wing hard line catholic seems to have prevailed.

And while they might all have been on the no side it seems that, the Yes side forgot who the biggest proportion of Noes really are: ordinary working and middle class people who don't like signing up to a treaty that even government officials admit to not having read.

  • Early results are showing that the Irish are voting 'no' on the treaty.

"The Lisbon treaty, as it is known, seeks to reshape EU institutions and powers in line with the bloc's rapid growth in recent years to 27 nations and 495 million people. It proposes many of the same reforms as the EU's previous master plan - a constitution that French and Dutch voters rejected in 2005. The treaty can only come into effect if all 27 member nations ratify it.

A rejection would mean the EU would have to continue operating under current rules. EU leaders would have to decide whether to draw up a new constitution -- which would mean years of meetings and drafts -- or they could ask the Irish people to vote again." --CNN

  • There seems to be a very high level of awareness in Ireland on the treaty, everyone appears to have an opinion with the majority rejecting it.

  • What does this mean for Ireland and the EU then? This article says it's a bunch of uncertainty... some saying Ireland must leave the EU, and others saying it's no big deal and to just move on.

  • Maybe Ireland is just bitter about not making it to Eurovision 2008 Finals

  • No we won't be leaving the EU, the vote against the treaty was not a vote against the EU.

The treaty is now dead, the other countries are still ratifying it to save face, but basically it's pointless.

Everything stays the same and if they want to make changes they are going to have to come up with some new ideas.

You must not forget that it is not 4 million Irish against 500million europeans, because the other europeans voices were not heard.

  • The European Commission says there is no "Plan B" but in reality it'll go ahead with plans to create their superstate anyway. The French and Dutch already rejected the first draft of the constitution but that did little to deter the direction of pro-EU officials.
