Guantanamo detainees beat Bush! Sort of . . .

It may seem unbelievable, but the detainees at Bush's "secret" prison in Guantanamo Bay have won a Supreme Court ruling 5 to 4, effectively canceling many of the "open-ended" detention policies the current US administration has had in effect post 9-11.

To put it into context, currently the federal gov't can arrest, detain, question and imprison ANY U.S. citizen, as well as suspected "terrorists" with no more probable cause than suspicion. There are rules against this, but the U.S. has pretty much disregarded international law as of late. Certain individuals have been kept in Guantanamo for years now under inhumane conditions--suspicions and confirmations of torture abound--and with no real rights to speak to lawyers.

Though the argument exists that we are "fighting for freedom", the sad truth is that we are simply becoming acclimated to foreigners--and even our own citizens--being treated with the same regard for human life that such ruthless historical figures like Hitler and Stalin imposed upon their "enemies of the state." Torture, in any form, should never be tolerated.

Hooray for human rights.
