Obama held a private, 20-minute meeting with members of the Bikes Belong board of directors. According to BRAIN.
“I think it’s very important that we (the bicycle industry) were involved with this type of event,” Kegel said. Kegel added that he personally supports Obama and believes that Obama can help end the partisanship that divides the country.
He also told them he seldom makes promises on what he would do if elected president, but that this was a promise he would keep.
160 people reportedly turned up for the event. Among them were Bikes Belong executive director Tim Blumenthal, cycling legend Greg LeMond, the president of SRAM Stan Day, and others from both the supply and retail side of the industry.
Obama’s promise to fund cycling isn’t technically groundbreaking. In the last Transportation Bill (passed in 2005), the Safe Routes to Schools program received over $600 million dollars and it’s safe to say that number will jump way up when the next bill is passed in 2009.

CHICAGO, IL (BRAIN)—Barack Obama, in a private 20-minute meeting with members of the Bikes Belong board of directors, told them if he were elected president he would increase funding for cycling and pedestrian projects. And the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee also said he would support Safe Routes to Schools programs.
He also told them he seldom makes promises on what he would do if elected president, but that this was a promise he would keep. Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong, laid out the industry’s position on boosting funding for cycling-related projects and for Safe Routes to Schools at the meeting.

I love it. And I have that very same spoke-card on my bike. Go Obama!
-
Great!
Thanks for posting meligrosa.
One thing that might not be too popular is:
when I am biking and I feel a dangerously close cal of a car just missing me..most of the time I look up and see someone on a cell phone...I use bikes and cells but they really are dangeerous to use when you are driving...esp near peds and bikes.-

Now let's hear him speak up for why he isn't denouncing mountain top removal.
-
Not sure if this is true but here is what I googled Jan
Obama is against Mountaintop Removal, while Hillary won't say she'll stop it and touts the economic benefits.
Obama on Mountaintop Removal: "We're tearing up the Appalachian Mountains because of fossil fuels" -
is this a hint if he's elected president we better start cycling...
-
Not enough even if true. Anyone can say we are tearing up the mountains at a campaign stop... Actions speak louder than words. He has to stand up to coal companies and he isn't doing it. He is touting CCS as a solution when it isn't. When he denounces it in total I'll respond accordingly. And Hillary Clinton isn't in this anymore and I don't support her so the point about her isn't really relevant here and I have criticized her on this as well. My point being is that this was a "safe" appearance and promise. Now let's get onto the hard stuff that really matters if he wants "change."

Right on Jan-
Total agreement there. Thes epoliticians and their safe ass comments only lead me to think they are going to be safe ass leaders.
Safe in that they don't step on the toes of big business.
THAT'S what needs to change. The politico hack clowns need to show us some true compassion for this beautiful little marble we call home. -
If you're clever, first you get the power, then you make the change. I believe that Obama sees his opportunity here to truly make history. Why would he pull the same stunt as W..? Obama knows that this is a historical moment in history and he is going to seize on the chance to become the greatest president that he can possibly be. If he has the backing of a Democratic congress, the sky is the limit, however, Rome was not built in a day...so critisize as much as you want...the guy has to have the chance to do it in order to do it...
The cycling thing is a meager start, and you won't see the change from coal, etc. overnight...a gradual weaning is more like it, while a grand scheme is worked out in detail to replace the archaic processes and practices of energy production...don't forget, these practices are some big shots' money scemes, not easily thwarted...-

He already has power... he is in Congress but chooses to vote "present" or not show up at all... where is the change? Sorry, for some of us you don't deserve the power unless you earn it.

Jan, you just can't give this guy a break...try to be a little more positive for the future...he doesn't have THE power yet, but he will, then you'll see, that he is the best person for the job...
Think positive..!!! Be positive..!!!-

Jan, you're becoming quite the nuisance on this issue, it seems. Especially for bringing up unrelated side issues on an article about bike riding. Please keep things on topic.
-
jan good for you for pointing out the bad with the good. you guys gotta remember, yes for right now, he is the best person for the job. the alternative is more war. i would have given much to see al gore or kucinich or edwards but reality is obama. he can and will do good. (didnt he do good for Illinois?) especially when compared to g.w bush and co. but he is not the end all be all till he shows us the money. he may very well have it in him to be great. we all must hope so. for to defeat the republican army we must be united as a people for once. we should all give our full support to obama in my opinion.

i keep waiting to see his "typical" evil politician side, and I'm so happy I have yet to find it.-

I agree with Jan:)
Saying is far easier than actually doing...
And of course, members of Congress don't seem to be able to do much of anything these days...including ..
CARING about how much we spend on Gas!
At any rate, this is America and we don't crown kings here!-
