A family of 6 in California became the first recipients in the United States of an intravenous milk thistle (Silybum marianum, Asteraceae) fruit (seed) extract to treat mushroom poisoning in January of 2007. The US Food and Drug Administration permitted emergency use of the drug Legalon Sil® (Madaus Pharma, Brussels; div. of Madaus AG, Cologne, Germany) for the patients, and 5 of the victims survived the poisoning.Legalon extract, the world’s first pharmaceutical-grade milk thistle extract, is made from the fruits (often called seeds) of milk thistle, standardized to 80% flavonolignans (silibinin [silybin], silydianin, and silychristin). Numerous published animal studies and human clinical trials have shown that milk thistle extract is safe, has antioxidant properties, assists in regeneration of RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the liver to create new hepatocytes, and eliminates toxins from the liver. The leaves of milk thistle, native to the Mediterranean area, have been used both as an edible plant and as a liver remedy in traditional medicine since Greco-Roman times.

The stuff from the local health food store would be great too. Milk thistle has been used for over 3,000 years.

1- this is NOT the first time this has been done in the US. An un-named individual somewhere on the East Coast smuggled milk thistle extract into the hospital room of a relative suffering from mushroom poisoning and awaiting a transplant. The extract was administered through the IV without physician's approval and a transplant was avoided. This happened approximately 20 years ago. I can't prove anything, but I can assure you that what you are reporting is only a documented case of this remedy finally being used officially.
2 - Milk Thistle extract has been used routinely in Europe in documented cases where the patient's only other option was a transplant. Why is it so difficult for some people like Floridian to admit that there may be simple cures in nature? Sorry, but not every medication has to go through millions and billions of dollars of research and development and insipid TV commercials before it's capable of saving your life. Submit to Mother Nature. Ultimately she has more power than the pharmaceutical industry that desires to beat her down and run off with the booty.

I agree completely. Many homopathic are amazing and powerful cures. We have used this for such along time as a liver cleanse. We are only able to get it the liquid at the health food store but it does help you feel much better.

The OTC formulas would not be sufficient for poisioning.. The IV medication is for emergency intervention.
