Colin Powell might pick Obama

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said it’s not out of the question that he may support expected Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in the race against John McCain.

Asked if it was a difficult choice between the two, Powell responded, “I think so. Yes,” according to Canada’s Globe and Mail. “Both of them certainly have the qualifications to be the president of the U.S., but both of them cannot be,” Powell said at a news conference prior to a leadership forum in Vancouver.

The first African-American Secretary of State said that race would not be a factor in casting his vote on a ballot that has the first African American nominee. “I will vote for the individual I think that brings the best set of tools to the problems of 21st-century America and the 21st-century world regardless of party, regardless of anything else other than the most qualified candidate,” he said, noting that military service would not necessarily play a role either. Powell, like McCain, is a veteran.

  • It would be interesting to see Obama pick Colin Powell as a running mate. Powell certainly brings along expertise that would benefit an Obama presidency, and their styles are not that different.

Powell said, “I will vote for the individual I think that brings the best set of tools to the problems of 21st-century America and the 21st-century world regardless of party, regardless of anything else other than the most qualified candidate,” and I can't think of anything that better expresses my own decision-criteria.

  • Colin has always been all good in my book. I think he'd make a great running mate for Obama, but I doubt that will happen.

  • The headline for this is misleading. Yes, the article says Powell might pick Obama, but it also says he might pick McCain. It doesn't really say much to me except that Powell doesn't want to express his opinion publicly.

  • Random thought....Powell has been out of the news for awhile....Did they ask him this because hes black? Are they trying to make this even MORE of a race issue?>

  • I would love to see Powell in Obama's cabinet. However, Obama picking him as a running mate may not be a good idea.

    I agree with SilenceNoMore.

There are still people in this country with race issues. If Obama were to pick Powell, it could divide support for him. Inflaming the race issue more.

  • World is ready, the problem is Americans not ready for a black President because they focus on the color of a man skin . God made man in his on image he will not Judge man by the color of our skin. We as Americans need to turn from our ugly ways we need God more then ever to heal our land America is in trouble, We need a Leader whose lead by God... without God we nothing, This Country was built on God Bless America and now we have all other Gods here wanting freedom and rule this Country without the real true God who lead our forefathers here.
