Bush admin ok's harassment of polar bears for "oil hunters"

WASHINGTON - Less than a month after declaring polar bears a threatened species because of global warming, the Bush administration is giving oil companies permission to annoy and potentially harm them in the pursuit of oil and natural gas.

The Fish and Wildlife Service issued regulations this week providing legal protection to seven oil companies planning to search for oil and gas in the Chukchi Sea off the northwestern coast of Alaska if "small numbers" of polar bears or Pacific walruses are incidentally harmed by their activities over the next five years.

Environmentalists said the new regulations give oil companies a blank check to harass the polar bear.About 2,000 of the 25,000 polar bears in the Arctic live in and around the Chukchi Sea, where the government in February auctioned off oil leases to ConocoPhillips Co., Shell Oil Co. and five other companies for $2.6 billion. Over objections from environmentalists and members of Congress, the sale occurred before the bear was classified as threatened in May.

Polar bears are naturally curious creatures and sensitive to changes in their environment. Vibrations, noises, unusual scents and the presence of industrial equipment can disrupt their quest for prey and their efforts to raise their young in snow dens.

  • I'm glad they are doing it.

Polar Bears shouldn't be curious. Hopefully they'll evolve or survivor of the fittest.....oh well.

  • And this is what the majority of Americans would accept and endorse? I don't think so. He deserves to get mauled by a polar bear.

  • Is HE actively trying to make me, and perhaps a large preponderant of American compassionates, dislike him? To me it's unhealthy to some degree to "hate anyone or anything", but he's pushing it! I really want to like him as a human being, which I find easier to do since it's difficult for me to dislike anyone within that context (we're all alike on that basis, even so, there are some discrepancies) , but as a president he's really making me think twice about the modicum of understanding and compassion I have towards the context he lives and functions within, and the man, George Bush, in general.

    I hope this makes sense...

  • I think it's time for the program I've always touted:

    Pistols for Polar Bears

Like pandas, they need all the firepower they can get!

  • I thought they were just put on the endangered list. Is this Bush's idea of caring for an animal's habitat?

I guess you cant teach a chimp to love a polar bear.

  • I'm okay with arming the polar bears.

This is yet another good reason to oust the Busheney gang via impeachment.

Obama's first year will be consumed with righting all the corporate benefits Busheney is no doubt collecting bribes for in off-shore bank accounts.

  • Bush has been pushing for this though!
if you really think about it, we have soooooo much oil in America that we could tap into, Oklahoma in example probably has a "gold mine" of oil just sitting there.

Bush and maybe even lobbyists want us to drill in Alaska but knowing there are so many activist who will refuse to let this happen because of the wildlife and because the oil is mostly in a Wildlife REFUGE the gas prices will go soaring through the roof to the point where americans will no longer care about the polar bears or other wildlife and begin to encourage the mining of oil in Alaska.

If only those americans knew how much oil we are just sitting on here in the states.

  • just so we can get more oil, to pollute more and consume. a lovely pathetic and blind cycle.

we kill/move/annoy just about every specie on this planet, for our selfish purposes! humans are disgusting.
  • Wait theres more!!!! Can President chimpy do more damage? YESSS!

  • If you hate humans so much -- then go kill yourself! and spare the rest of us your whining.

Look, get this and get this good. 1) The area north of the Arctic Circle set aside for drilling for oil compared to the rest of ANWR is analogous (for you government educated liberals out there, that means the same as) to the size of a football compared to a football field! 2) your beloved Jimmy Carter is the one who set that land aside back in 1978 specifically for oil drilling and it was also your beloved Bill Clinton who chose to ignore the threat to national security and allow us to continue buying oil from countries that hate America by vetoing legislation that would have begun exploration and drilling in ANWR. Had that bill been signed, we would be pulling about 2 million barrels of oil per day out of ANWR right now and gasoline wouldn't be $4.50 per gallon.

Don't blame Bush for this one. Blame your own stupid liberal Congress-folk for being more concerned with getting re-elected than caring that you pay $4.50 for gasoline. You let your hatred of Bush blind you to the fact that it's the liberal Democrats in Congress that have put YOU in this position and not Bush.

But hey, if you like paying $4.50/gallon for gasoline, wait until this summer when it gets to be $5.00 and then $10.00 by Christmas. Maybe then you'll pull your own heads out of your butts and realize that I'm right, you're wrong and you have no one to blame but yourselves for being so stupid. Oh, wait, that ain't gonna happen any more than Bush will get impeached.

BTW: it isn't the oil companies that are raping your rectum at the pump, it's the commodities traders and futures speculators that are driving the price of oil up. It only costs about $2.00/barrel to pull oil out of the ground and Saudi Arabia is only paying 45 cents per gallon for gas. Yet everyone wants to be friends with the Saudis. It's also the environmental, the-sky-is-falling, Al-Gore-Hollywood morons who are giving you a butt-raping as well. These idiots won't let refineries be built or alternative fuel methods be used because they're afraid of global warming. Global Warming? That's a crock of crap! If CO2 is such a problem then humans need to stop breathing! Oh, oops! That's not possible.

  • Why do Oil Companies get exemptions from the law? Regardless of when deals were made, the law is the law is the law...

This is not an issue about polar bears but about exemptions to the laws for corporations and corporate interests...

  • DOUBLE ARGHH!! Tyranny again from the Bush Junta! As long as it helps his freinds and his bank account he doesn't give a damn the legacy he leaves behind for those that will live on this earth after he's gone. I, too, can't wait for his last day in office, BUT it's not enough. We all need to scream loudly for the bears by writing letters to the editors, calling our Congress(wo)men http://senate.gov & http://house.gov], the Fish & Wildlife Service [click on the link/picture above] and let them know we won't let this stand - we want the regulations changed to protect the bears and other wildlife - or better yet to revoke the sale of the oil leases.

  • are you surprised that Bush allow anything to be done for oil???
Iraq, Polar bears, whatever need to be done...

  • It would be one thing if the oil companies actually "annoyed" polar bears in a safe way to keep them away from potential hazards on the oil fields. The major problem is that they will probably revert to injuring and killing these animals.
    NailBunnyLuver
  • I don't get it; the Bush Administration is willing to harm innocent animals in the search for the very thing that helps to create global warming?
What a bastard. I don't see polar bears going into Bush's backyard and mauling him to get some fish...although, I really wish they would.

  • It's all about the dollar. The dollar trumps everything. It is our highest value. It is more important than our environment, more important than bears, than whales, than clean air, than human health. Let's cut the BS and start teaching our kids that the only thing that truly matters is money.

  • you guys are so retarded its scary.

  • This isn't at all surprising to me. After all, look at how Dubya has treated the people in his own country.

Nothing will get in the way of Bush and the oil money. The death's accrued in Iraq are proof of that.
    vixen0078
  • Its a freaking bear people, and if there are 25000 of them how are they a endangered species?
    clayjj05
  • A president's job is the dirtiest job. There are so many factions out there, it is impossible to make them happy.

look for oil, kill a bear. look for oil some where else, kill a human. look for alternative fuels, destroy thousands of jobs. find an alternate fuel source, it's an import so the uber patriots go nuts. Not a fun job.

  • This is just another bad decision made by the most incompetant and totally inept administration our great country has ever been victimized by.How many votes did this one buy you,Bush?Oh,my bad,Iforgot you can't count past ten.

  • I can't figure out why George Bush's name is in the title of this article. I can't figure out why people are using "he" and "him" to describe what the article is referring to.

Last time I checked, the US wasn't a dictatorship and George Bush doesn't sign off on, or approve EVERY single action taken by the federal government. The office of the president makes many decisions, but doesn't have as much power as Congress or state governments in this regard. Why must people always try to demonize the president for such things that a small little wing of government does. So silly.

And second, we are in an energy crisis. We need more oil, or another technology that can be completely pervasive in the next few years. Ethanol is just a ploy for farmers to get paid. Solar isn't efficient enough yet. Wind is fickle. Environmentalists have strangled nuclear. So, we must get more oil for the short term. I agree that we need a better long term solution, but if we have to kill some polar bears to keep the economy from collapsing, then I say okay.

Most other countries with coastline drill on or around their oceans. The US should too.
    willyb
  • Squilla1123 hit the thing right on the head. Sure we need oil now BUT at the same time we need to work for other technologies. There's enough oil between ANWR and North Dakota that we don't need th buy oil from Mexico, Canada, Saudi Arabia or Venezuela for the next 60-100 years. We can start pulling oil out now and tell OPEC to kiss our backsides while we open up the way for nuclear, clean coal technologies and alternative fuel vehicles. It is a matter of national security that we need to stop buying oil from other places and use our own while we innovate other technologies. We haven't built a refinery in America in over 30 years because thumb-sucking environmental crybabies have strangled Congress with stupid laws that do more harm in the long run than good.

Drill here, drill now, save money. It's more than a bumper sticker -- it needs to be the mantra of America!

  • Oh and one more thing, posting pictures of polar bear cubs isn't making your point. It's only proves that you don't have real facts to back up your objections. That's what environmental terrorists do when they don't have real facts to support their outlandish claims -- they throw pictures of cute little animals in your face and try to appeal to your emotional side and not your logical side.
    decarson
  • It really is all about money. We don't care about our own people how is harming animals supposed to make an impact. it's disgusting.
    zbialick
  • I'm going to have to agree with decarson. We really need this oil (anyway polar bears numbers are actually going up) we cant just wait until it hits $50.00 a gallonand then start to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to build another refinery, or we could just use nuclear energy but people are too scared to do that.
    ctrl_alt_del
  • Unfortunately, severe conditions such as this will continue to occur unless we make a stand. The protection of endangered specie's is of modicum importance to the American culture of the 21st century. WHY STAND ON A SILENT PLATFORM, FIGHT THE WAR, F@%$ THE NORM!
    KrebstarSB
  • What are the really going to do to the bears. You probably don't eat meat. Well I eat polar bear.
    jeffreyak
  • Why are we drilling for oil?

With the swish of the pen we could all be forced into using biodiesel. Why aren't we doing that? Have we not realized that this free trade pyramid is going to collapse unless someone comes to their senses?
