  • Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

At least I visited it while it was how it was.

It's a bad idea anyways; not much you can do on the island more than a few hours. You tour it, and then what? Only so much you can see. Every time you want to get back on land, or back to your room, you have to rely on a ship to take you. It's very inconvenient if you forget something and have to take an extra two trips, or if you're drunk at 3a.m. in San Fran and have to find a way back home. And just imagine how much extra fuel is going to take to build it and transport people to and from the island. Unnecessary and a waste of money in opinion. Leave the island as authentic as it is.

  • don't care either way, i can't afford 5 star hotels anyways

  • No! What the hell!?!?!

  • Mixing the rich with the criminals is never a bad idea. I'm sure this will go just fine.

  • This is extremely ridiculous!
  • They should make the rooms prison themed. If the kids get out of line, throw them in the hole for a day. Perfect!

  • It's just sitting there. They could turn it into an interesting resort and keep some of it for museum like purpose.

It's a creative genius of an idea. People want buildings like they have in Dubai but they refuse to release an island to be a resort? Come-come they could make something most interesting.

  • JJammer, it's already got a museum. You can tour the whole thing, and it's quite a popular tourist attraction already.
It really isn't 'just sitting there'.
    ILiveonaClock
  • That would be badass... kind of a weird commute for the employees, though. I, for one, would love to be able to windsurf to my job.

  • Whatever! I'm sure there are many more important things.

  • what next!

  • It was a very creepy place. Wouldn't want to sleep there. I did not enjoy it too much.

  • With all of the bad energy that was present there it would probably be safe not to let hundreds of thousands even millions of people stay there with their families. I only hope that they really rethink this whole project because their could be some strange activities happening.

  • Hotel? I want my plastic anti-mutant gun wielding soldiers deployed their to protect us against Magneto!
  • Move the San Fran Bridge and you got yourself a reenactment.
    J_Jammer
  • We'd be better off if we demolished the structures and made the island a wind turbine farm. It blows a steady 10-30 over the island most of the year.

  • this is what they do with it rather than let native americans have it back? seriously? aren't there enough hotels in the world?
    spoonieday
  • good luck with that

  • That thumping sound? It's the sound of my head hitting my desk repeatedly.

  • Heck.. why not add a 5 star hotel in the middle of the Smithsonian since it is just sitting there.

Yeah its a building that sits there, like all other buildings in the world. The difference is this is a historical landmark that draws in millions of people every year and already has 5 star hotels on both sides of the bay catering to them.

Outside of having this be a total niche prison themed Disneyland, minus rides, established mass transportation, dinning, or all that fun stuff we need to live. This place already sees a lot of damage every year just from foot traffic. Adding a hotel to this would only increase this exponentially and degrading yet another US landmark in to the oblivion of cheap plastic souvenirs and commercialism.

This is not mentioning the increase in transportation costs to get guests, employees, regular tourists, food, and all other necessities from the island to the shore multiple times a day. Seriously, they can stay at already famous landmarked hotels in the city or in Marin that will cater to their every need. Besides there is a heck of a lot more things to do off the island then on.

Costs seriously out weigh the outcome in this case.

  • Something tells me this won't go over too well with some folks.

  • Oh for crying out loud: is nothing safe from development?
    Wreyeter
  • no, nothing is safe. our country loves to deface historical places in order to make money off of them. at least this isn't as bad as mount rushmore.
    spoonieday
  • Considering Rushmore was originally sacred Native American land which now sells pictures of massacred cultural leaders in the gift shops... I'm sad to say most likely this hotel will happen. So sad.

  • before ANYTHING is done how about filming some type of reality television show there - like "Big Brother-the haunted version" - it would be awesome.
    lovs1949
  • It's a cold and miserable place - I cannot image anyone willing to spend money to stay there.

  • It'll be under water in 5 to 10 years anyway.

  • they must not be making enough dinero with tourism to the island.
    stephenthomson
  • I've been to Alcatraz, there isn't much to the "tourist attraction", all they use is a couple of cells in it, it's very short and boring tour.

The island has already been built on so it's already been "defaced"

So building on some of the other unused parts is only going to enhance the "tourist attraction" by giving something else to bring people there for since most of it is just going to waste.

The history isn't going anywhere and do you need empty buildings to make it "authentic?" it's significance as a prison doesn't need to have abandoned storehouses "preserved" to keep it a landmark

  • what most of you have neglected to mention is that this is a very symbolic piece of land. Know your history, and if you don't look up American indian Movement or John Trudell.
Making this into a 5 star hotel or filling it further with commercialism , is like spitting in the face of Native americans, as if enough has not already been done. Give it back and while you are at it give back the treaty lands of 1868..

  • Do you think they'll give it a jail theme?
