Myth: Domestic vioence doesn't exist among same-sex couples

Fact: At least one in four gay and lesbian partners wil experience domestic violence in his or her lifetime.

Gay and lesbian couples experience the same issues of power and control as heterosexual couples. This may manifest itself in physical, sexual, verbal and economic abuse.

A major barrier to recognizing abuse. in same-sex couples is that domestic violence has traditionnaly been portrayed as a heterosexual issue with male perpetrators and female victims.
There is a strong feeling in the lesbian community that lesbians are not violent. That is simply not the case.

Studies show that as many as a thrid of lesbians have been victims of sexual assault or coercion at the hands of another woman.

  • This only points out what we should know by now--gays and lesbians are people to, and subject to the same triumphs and faults as the rest and best of us. To suggest anything else is foolish.
  • Um....i'm a part of the bisexual community.......and know many people in the gay community and i think the lesbians are fooling themselves.....we see the violent ones....especially the Bulls

  • Poison.

That is my point. We are being sold this utopia idea that Gay families will be full of love and that 2 gays fathers and mothers will be better than parents in traditional families (implying, there is no love there).

    That is a myth.

  • I've never heard of this myth, it sounds like an entirely fabricated myth to make a point. Because without having the 'myth' as an anchor, you've just said a whole lot of nothing.

It seems more of a way of saying 'same sex couples exist' - are there really people saying or assuming that certain sexual choices mean less chance of friction in a relationship? I'd imagine there would be more.

So, perhaps you should give evidence that this myth even exists.

    > ....i'm a part of the bisexual community...

You have a community? Do you think there should be a straight community as well, or are we apathetic about these things?

I find grouping of people by race or sexuality highly offensive, yet for some reason people are eager to be categorized and grouped by their sexual choices.
