The Los Angeles Lakers won game 5 of the NBA Finals last night, sending the series back to Boston. The Celtics lead the series 3-2, and the Lakers are trying to become the first team ever to win the title after trailing in the series 3-1.

Go Celtics!! ; )

  • As a former NBA ref recently stated, the NBA wants the series to last as many games as possible. For two big-name teams like these, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes to game 7.

  • Lakers all the way. That being said I still have to wonder about the officiating and how involved the league is with the length of this series. I just wonder how the league is going to deal with this after the finals and beyond.

  • Honestly LA should have run Boston off the court in 5 but since Kobe is an consistent punk and Sterns wants the most bang for his buck the series had to go at leas 6 and most likely 7. I think there's a lot of truth in what that convicted ref had to say.

  • Ha, I've always said Boston in 6. I did not want Boston to win, but I'm not a huge fan of the Lakers and I feel Kevin Garnet really deserves a ring.

    Go Celtics!
  • I haven't watched a basketball game since Jordan retired. I manged to watch last night's game and I must say that it was, well, good. The Lakers barely won. The Celtics are going to finish this on their home court. I'm rooting for them, especially Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. The Bucks were fools to let him and Glenn Robinson get away. Herb Kohl (owner) is such a fuckin' cheapskate.

  • Boston won that game, in reality it should be over right now. Boston might deserve to win next game either, but they won't. If you like basketball that much, just tune into game 7 because the next one's outcome is already set.

  • The fat lady isn't singing but she is warming up. Congratulations Boston.

  • It should be interesting. Kobe is the best NBA player since MJ. He ranks right up there with Magic and Larry. That said, he is not perfect. Lakers will need to see lots out of Gasol, Fischer, and Odom if they are going to win it all. My prediction is that the Lakers win it all!

  • Winning last night actually makes losing Game 4 that much more painful. The Lakers should be up 3-2 right now, headed to Boston to close it out. Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

All you Boston fans/Lakers haters, just remember that anything is possible. If we win Game 6, that just sets up an anything goes Game 7. Would you really bet against Kobe in a Game 7?

  • I'm sorry Lakers fans, but the Lakers simply don't have what it takes to win the championship this year. Giving up a 24 point lead in one game and an 18 point lead in another is just awful to say the least. Lakers have a lot of potential, but this year is the Celtics year.

  • Let's not forget that since at least 99, the only Western Conference team to lose in the Finals was none other than the Lakers to the Detroit Pistons in 2004. Can we see the same western conference team go down again - for the second time?! My bets are on it! :)
  • it was actually 2004....we Lakers fans don't forget how our dysfunctional squad went out that year.

  • The Lakers won last night even with all of Pierce's points. We have the ability to win game 6 & 7. You dam Boston fans won't see it coming,,, we're taking it all the way! GO LAKERS!!! woo hoo!

  • Sorry zonecoach,
Kobe is a great individual talent but far from the likes of Magic and Bird. Basketball is a team sport and players like Magic and Bird significantly raised the level of the players around them. Magic has been a part of championship teams on every level he's played (HS, College, Pros and the Olympics). The Lakers win now despite Kobe as opposed to because of him. Kobe tends to be disruptive because he would rather lose his way then win your way.

One thing is for sure, if for some odd reason LA does pull this off and take game 7 somebody better put Kevin Garnett on suicide watch.

  • Wow, eldamon, you have no idea what you're talking about. How is the MVP a detriment to his team? How do the Lakers win "despite" Kobe rather than thanks to him? Have you seen what happens to this team when he's on the bench???

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say that the Lakers might win if Odom & Gasol can ever get their heads out of their asses and play with some consistency?

  • bobdobalina,

Nope, not even close. I've followed this team from way back when Wilt was our center taking on Kareem and the Bucks. Kobe is disruptive because he can't accept his role as the leagues best 2nd option. As for the MVP, CP3 (aka Chris Paul) should have gotten that honor. He did more with less than Kobe did this year. If you look at this objectively instead as a rabid fan it would be easier for you to see how fluid the team plays when the "black hole" isn't in the game (the ball goes in and never comes out).

  • hmmm..maybe I misjudged you. I don't agree with your opinion, but I respect it.

I'm actually able to approach this as a basketball fan more than a Lakers fan. The Lakers definitely have more talent than the Hornets, but that doesn't mean Kobe shouldn't be the MVP. He's always in a lose lose - if he scores a bunch of points, he's a selfish ball hog. If he looks to dish and get everyone involved, he's selfish for not dominating the game. Which is it? What can Kobe do to win your praise? Check out his line from last night:
    25 pts
    7 boards
    4 assists
    5 steals
    6 TO's

Obviously the 6 TO's isn't pretty, but that line tells the tale of a very solid all around game.

Look back to Game 4 - he only scored 17 points BUT had 10 assists as he tried & tried to get the rest of the guys involved. They blew a 24 point lead and might have cost themselves the title. I'll take less assists and more points if it means we win the ball game.

  • No worries,
In all honesty Kobe is a great individual player but again, b-ball is a team sport. Kobe tends to decide what he's going to do before he starts playing instead of being an integral part of the game or a good teammate. He goes in thinking "I'm going to pass the 1st half and score the 2nd" or some such thing. If he'd simply play the game instead of trying to be above it as a scorer or a facilitator he'd do so much better for himself and his teammates. It's hard for anyone else to get in a rhythm having to wait to see what Kobe's going to do. Also it makes it real easy for the other team to figure out our game plan if Kobe is being so transparent. Boston knows all they need to do is shut Kobe down in the 4th qtr and they have a good shot at winning. That's why you see the double and triple teams coming at the end of the games.

  • It's strange how the momentum is 100% in each game, both teams go on runs. The Celtics are a superior defensive team. The Lakers are all offense, but they play well together, but there is a reason why Boston is the BEST team in the league.

The Lakers are going to get DECIMATED by 25 points. But, if "magically" they win game 6, then the Lakers will win game 7 also.
  • Hmm, I don't think it will be a blow out. I bet it will be far more tragic as in game 4. The Lakers will get out to another huge lead, lose it in the 3rd and lose the game by 4-6 points in the end.
    eldamon
  • looks like she started singing and it was a blow out
  • Some of you called it - it's there in b/w for everyone to see.

My Lakers did not show up at all. I can't believe that they just laid down like dogs...what a shame. Congrats to the Celt's - I hate 'em, but they were the better team and fully deserve it.
