Stan Winston, an Oscar-winning visual effects artist, has died at age 62.

Winston died at home Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a rep from Stan Winston Studio.

"Stan died peacefully at home surrounded by family," a spokeswoman said.

Winston won four visual effects Oscars and earned multiple nominations. His first Oscar was for James Cameron's "Aliens" (1986). Winston later won two Oscars for "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1992) (visual effects and makeup) and 1993's "Jurassic Park."

Phil Tippett, who shared a visual effects Oscar with Winston on "Jurassic Park," noted that Winston was one of the best in the business.

"Stan contributed to some of the greatest -- fantastic movie characters in motion picture history," Tippett said. "His loss in a great one and he will be missed."

In lieu of flowers, Winston's family is requesting that donations be made to his charities of choice, a list of which will be posted here shortly.

  • This news hits me really, really hard. There were only a few people in the film business who really inspired me. Stan Winston made that short list. You will be missed.

  • What an incredible loss. This guy paved the way for many of the effects we all take for granted in movies today. He was the master of his trade.

I will never forget the impact your effects had on me as a teenager watching some of my favorite movies. God bless you Mr. Winston, and your family.

    Sad day.
  • That's sad, what a hero, what a career - Terminator, Aliens, Predator, The Thing, Jurrasic Park, Batman... Manimal! Stan R.I.P.

I hope his visual effects legacy lives on. It would be a shame if non-CGI effects became scarce with this loss.

  • Damn. I've been enjoying the hell out of, and finding inspiration in, his creatures and effects for many, many years.

Kudos to him, and his excellent work.

  • Stan was the creator of our generations greatest movie monsters..... Predator, Alien, Terminator, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, and Iron Man's suit being his final masterpiece.

Today's special effects artists are left with some big shoes to fill.

    Thank you and goodbye Stan.
  • James Cameron's obituary for Stan sums up the mans career perfectly. Give it a read.

  • When I was younger I read an article on him about what it was like working on Jurassic Park and I remember thinking "that would be a cool job".

Goodbye and thanks for inspiring someone.

  • Although he'll be missed incredibly, what he has given and taught the scene will no doubt live on for a long long time.

  • Are they gonna play the Terminator 2 music at his Funeral ? You know the music that plays in the beginning, then again when the Terminator is melting into the lava?

  • He penciled the idea for the Predator design whilst he was on a flight. How cool is that?! Such an iconic image sketched out in a matter of minutes. The guy was a genius!

  • Very sad to hear of the death of a legend who gave so much to the industry. I agree with natenate, i think it would be a shame if the days of 'real' effects were to disappear in favour of CG. Somehow computer effects lack some of the magic so apparent in Stan's creations.
    Pardon
  • R.I.P. Mr. Winston.
