There are alot of factors that contribute to what makes up the whole problem of a fatherless generation in the black community. In fact, some believe that the music/movie industry has had a large part to play in the absences of fathers in black households. The media affects blacks in ways that I don't believe we realize. I believe it had a signiicant part in it, but it does not make up the entire problem.

I believe society has had a negative standard set up against our black men and the black men unconsciencely [and some consciencely] play the parts assigned to them. Environmental factors are another part to blame, such as growing up in 'ghettos' and 'projects' and being told that "you will never make it out of here". Once you are accustomed to hearing something for so long, you believe it, unless you have the mind to break free.

If black men see themselves as family men, working hard to support and provide for their family, then they would be just that. But most dont. They see themselves as:

[I just listed common sterotypes, not all are mentioned.]

1.)a gang member who is hard and one that 'no one can touch'. These are the guys that i see mostly in my small close-knit community. [should I mention that in this community you have to be a doctor or lawyer to be somebody?]

2.)a "playa" who can have any girl without the benefits of a REAL relationship with her. Think about rap artist Plies who coined "bust it baby".

3.)a 'plastic' rap star who probably isn't in it because he loves it, but because he needs money.

4.)or all three. Some want to be everything they want to be without any real commitments such as being a husband or a father.

Thus, the problem of a fatherless generation.
