Wired to be Gay

Scientists at the famous Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm have discovered that the brains of homosexual men and women are structured in the same way as the brains of straight people of their opposite gender. This study has also determined that this basic structural difference of the brains of homosexual people develops in the fetal stage, which means that homosexuals and lesbians were born that way. This will of course disappoint the rabid homphobes.

This does make sense for a lot of people.
I don't prefer to be gay, I just am. I enjoy reading evidence that supports the truth.

  • I actually heard about this already once but never saw any evidence that it's true... until now.

  • Interesting
However people who hate homosexuals are probably just going to say that gays have ''inferior'' genes.

  • Years ago some university did research that came up with proof that homosexuals were born that way. I don't remember exactly what it was I do remember reading about it though. Haven't been able to find anything about it since. I just knew that it had been proven. I'm so glad this is out maybe some of the stupidity and hatefulness will stop now. Thanks Vierotchka.
  • Generally, those who hate gays are people who repress their own homosexuality and fear (hatred is, after all, but a manifestation of fear) gays because being confronted with homosexuals makes them feel very uncomfortable, at best.

  • If you have ever personally known a gay person than this "discovery" is fairly obvious...

but hopefully this story gets the coverage it deserves as I am sick of hearing about ignorant Christians, Muslims etc. trying to "convert" homosexuals back to heterosexual

  • Thank you Stockholm! This is gigantor. But the religious right will think of some way to weasel around it.
    And to Vierotchka,
no offense, but I never agreed with the term homophobia. Bigots act with hatred, not fear, and I think calling it a phobia confuses the issue and subtly excuses the hater.

But I can just imagine the christian fundies, "Science is wrong. The bible says so, so it's the truth and the only truth." This country is so far behind.

  • If this is proven to be true, by the countless skeptics that will no doubt try to discredit this finding, this discovery will just reaffirm what I've always thought to be true. :) That's pretty amazing news though. How exciting.

  • People are not born gay and they are not made gay.
You are not born sexually developed.
People are definitely born more likely to be gay, third+ born sons have much high % that are gay for example, but it's still a certain mixture of nature and nurture.

Thats kinda of like saying any number of traits are set in stone in a person before birth, like Psychopaths are born psychopaths. (No I am not saying, gay people are like psychopaths before anyone says that.)

It's almost a dangerous Calvinistic predetermination.

  • One more thing: to some degree I agree with the notion that nurture plays a significant role in how a child grows up to be. That said I have reason to believe that we're all born with a blank slated configuration, albeit with a certain "structure" - through which information is processed, e.g. artist or visual orientated children will have a different set of tunnels through which images/info will passage through, likewise "engineer" type minds will probably have more direct and short paths through which information is processed, thus resulting in decisive straightforward (excuse the pun) thinking, as oppose to the nuances of the artistic oriented mind - but I digress: I believe that certain aspects of someones personality are awakened, or triggered - and as an extension their sexual preference - due to how a parent or guardian raises there child, and of course the environment within which they grow up in.

Unfortunately I must bring up that there's a significant differences between the gay man who choses to drift (e.g. Reichen) and the gay man who grows up insecure (e.g Chris Crocker perhaps) bitter and obnoxiously expressive in their "radical queerness" (as Tony Kushner would have put it) simply to exert their presence on others, underlined with a feeling of betrayal or estrangement. I bring this up because I'm currently battling the negative connotation on the word "Gay" and the stereotypical images that it brings to mind. I'm someone who doesn't necessarily fit this "gay facade", but when people make the assumption of the latter I'm faced with irrational people who think they have me figured it. They're blinded by there "ideas" of who they think I am, and as such they see me (like a desperate man sees a mirage in the distance) the way their ideas seem to see me. :) I guess it really doesn't matter though. :)

i'm a little skpetical of placing so much weight on the "born gay studies". it helps people fall back on the argument that of course no one would choose to be gay.

  • It's strange that they do all these probing studies on gay people.

WHATS THE BIG FUSS, they're gay. So what.

  • This is almost as funny as WMD. Why aren't these behaviors found within the animal kingdom as well? I watch the Discovery, and History Channel quite a bit. Yet I've never seen, or heard of the possibility for there to be a homosexual cat, dog, squirrel, horse, lion, elephant, baboon, ape, or whatever the case may be.It's never been taught in any school or University I've attended even theorhetically. I find that curious, unless animals are simply more dignified. Or maybe we completely misunderstand certain Catholic priests, and should reconsider that they are just wired to molest young boys? What an age of relativism we live in, we can justify about anything if we have to.... and it's "never" our fault. Imagine if Judgement Day were a real event, do you really think you'd be able to sell the "I was wired to be gay" argument? I'm just trying to cover all the bases here, because you could either be in the clear, or look like a total idiot.

Given the timing of this post, and its coinciding with a recent controversial ruling for same-sex marriages in California, I highly doubt any American university is willing to risk its reputation with such questionable issues, unless it wanted to see it's Alumni investments plummett. It is only when academia is able to attain a common consensus, that such an issue will even have a chance at being taken seriously. Until then, this is just mere propaganda.

  • It seems right to me.
I know I am 100% straight but don't look down on anyone with other preferences..thats the way they are.
I am glad that this evidence backs up what is obvious for most of us.

  • This issue has always been in a special category for me.
The category where, I'de rather not make a firm decision.
Until it is revealed to me, I'll worry about something else.
Being born gay or becoming it, thats an issue for Homosexuals to worry about. Not me.

  • Not all christians and/or conservatives who dislike homosexuality are the science-hating Bible-thumping Luddites people stereotype them as. Some may see this news as proof that homosexuality can be cured thru science or as mentioned above take a nazi-esque genetics approach that gays are genetically inferior. Never underestimate the power of hatred and stupidity.

  • Whether or not you think one is predisposed to be gay, or if you believe it's a choice, at the end of the day, it's about being able able to live out our lives freely. Our moral compasses change in time, and what used to be strange, gets replaced with something stranger. Live and let live.

  • Homophobic is cliche.

It's one of those abused words. People toss that around like it's ok to call everyone that doesn't seem to agree that word.

It's like calling everyone that veggies unhealthy.

    It's simply not true.

Whether or not someone agrees isn't bases enough to determine if someone is a homophobic. What matters is how they treat such persons. If they are respectful and never ill towards them in speech or in action then they cannot be homophobic no matter if they disagree with how they live their life.

People don't agree with how China runs their country but it's their country and yet they are going to tell them they are mean. People feel the need to tell others when and where they are wrong except in sexuality and I find that hypocritical. Who are you to say what is and isn't humane other than via your own opinion.

How do you not know that Chinese people are born the way they are in how they treat their own? Who are you to tell them how they should live their lives?

This works in so many ways.

I just find it funny when people deem it right to tell people what to do and the flip a mood and alter it for themselves. It's not at all consistent and it's not at all in line with how they want others to act.

  • I thought this had been known for ages :S

my science teacher said years ago its because a gay man has to much eastrogen (female hormone) which makes them like men and obviously some have more than others, making them act more feminine. If your a homophobe you really need to get a life anyway, and your probably arrogant/stupid enough to dismiss this study.
    Joe_Leo
  • Anyone who is the friend or family member of a gay person could have told you this.

And it took how many years for scientists to figure this out?
    SpookyFish
  • It's not a matter of figuring it out. It's a matter of having evidence to back them up. They were making sure that there was support.

    Science isn't gut feelings.

  • I'm also convinced that I was born straight. However, as with any culture, there can't be only one way to associate. I mean, ethnicity, gender is more a state of mind than a physiological proof. These scientist are playing in dangerous waters.
    arturogarza
  • i heard about this a while ago in a grad level physiological psych class. i agree with jarratt, though, that it makes it seem like gay people are not "normal". i think what we should take away from this study is that people's genetics can predispose people for certain things, while not necessarily determining the outcome.

  • This must be Gay day at Current. 3 stories about gay on TV.

Did they look at these people when they were babies, then children, then teeenagers or just when they were adults ?
    soleil10
  • April, but then that would mean anyone with any genetic difference is not "normal" by that reasoning, no?

People who are left handed are genetically predisposed to write with their left hands... therefore abnormal. I mean, back in the day they used to force left handed children to write with their right hand (my grandmother told me stories of how every time she used her left hand she would have a ruler taken to it).

The difference here is its taken to a bigger extreme because of sexuality and religion and judgement being involved. Speaking of which - Kevdawg, he who casts the first stone. Isn't judgement sinning? And if you are going to get technical - stop pleasuring yourself... it's just as "sinful." Take a step away from the stone age. Do a little research - there were reasons why man (who wrote your bible) thought it to be sinful in the first place and all of those reasons no longer hold true as it is. BUT like a lot of people have said in here, regardless of why someone is the way it is... your comment comes from ignorance. Go read this one:
