Harsh binge drinking adverts roll out

In a bid to curb the ever increasing numbers of binge drinkers on the streets of Britain, a new advertising campaign has been launched which shows the stark reality of going out and drinking 20 vodka and cokes.

One of the messages in the campaign reads, "You wouldn't start a night like this, so why end it that way?" with a girl smearing vomit into her beautiful locks.

Another of the ads shows a man getting ready for his big night out, except he rips out his ear-ring, smashes his face into a wardrobe door, urinates on his shoes and then spills a kebab all down his shirt.

  • This will have NO effect on ANYONE.

  • Easy now.. like the drink drive campaign, i find these ads too blunt an instrument. We're not all from Hastings are we?

  • This comes hot on the heels of the Scottish parliament's decision to debate "upping" the drink-buying age from 18 to 21.

Current News covered the story here.

  • I like the ad, it's very clever, but I'm not sure these campaigns are effective.

I'm posting my favourite binge drinking ad, "Bloody Mary". It was made by MTV Europe.
There was the "Black Russian" version as well, but I can't seem to find it.

  • Ben Dorries is right, in towns all over the country young people see getting yourselve into this sort of state a badge of honour.

The adverts will probably help curb students & young professionals habits but in towns like Hastings it may just bait them to get this messy.

  • sometimes I want to mash my face into the wall...

Ireland (I know this isn't about ireland btw) has the Highest level of production from its workforce.
It also has the highest rate of binge drink and alcohol consumption except for the Czechs (we will get the title next year with any luck) Our school system is fircely competitive, more emphasis than ever is placed on the importance of jobs.

The only bits of relief are the ever expanding consumer culture and drinking yourself into a world that isn't a grey nightmare.

Shit weather + Lack of anything to do in grey towns + disposable income = Bladdered.

  • OMK- I too am from a record holding local, Denver is "The Most Dangerously Drunk" city in America. Almost every one there that this advert would apply to views it as a badge of honor. - Again, lack of anything to do besides work and sleep.

  • I agree that the kind of drinking culture we've developed in the UK is a problem.

Unfortunately this guy ends up looking like the shit before he leaves the house.

  • Not saying Britain doesn't have a problem, but binge drinking is pretty common in America, even Canada. I don't see any "don't drink" ads targeted for teens here.

  • I wonder if these ads really ever take effect, or if they become wrapped up in pop-culture that we laugh about later... like the anti-drug campaigns from the 1980s.

  • I'm gonna say these ads probably won't stop me from drinking anytime soon.

  • The campaign is costing £4m - do you reckon its worth it?

  • I don't know, i like the ad, i think it makes a great point.

I'm not against drinking or getting rowdy, but I think lots of people might benefit from this kind of message.
