No better way to learn about Beijing right now than the man caught up in the middle of it. My friend Nick, who works for NBC, tells exactly how bad it's getting.

  • Subway security monitoring for the Olympics: http://olympics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/12/in-beijing... We know who you are...

    Your papers, please!

  • They are really starting to crack down on the internet stuff... crazy stuff.

And just a quick comment on this Shanghai Diary:
It seems as though, and I could be horribly wrong so I apologise in advance if I am, the government is trying to make China = Beijing. You can't go anywhere except the places that they want you to go.. and therefore won't be able see anything that they don't want you to see. I would assume that anything outside the normal tourist areas and the olympic areas will be off limits to general public coming into the country by the time the first people arrive.

  • nice link, SDSteve - and....hmmmm, not doing a lot to get away from that 'police state' - or maybe I'm just lumping totally random things in.

light487 - you've hit on something that I'll bring up later today, good point.

  • gave it a second listen... understood most, but still hard to follow...

  • Apparently your friend is not a journalist. Although the audio wasn't great, his expression was also difficult to understand.

  • in his defense, it was raining outside and I just pulled the camera out - was my fault, I need to get closer.

funny thing was, my friend Kacey (the photographer) and Christine Lu (podcaster) both spoke quietly and no one seemed to mind, ha ha ha.

be nice to Nick and maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to talk him into sending us a report from inside Olympic Village (where he'll be the whole time) each week.

  • I am so angry at your ignorance. I have been here all summer too and I think that you should do some research before you waste your time opening your mouth. What do you think other countries do when there are masses of people that come to town!?!?!? They control it as best they can and they try to make it look nice so people will come back! SIMPLE not SCANDAL.
READ SOME HISTORY! How about reporting on WHY? You have a huge opportunity to bridge cultures.
You should learn about what Americans do for crowd control.............Are you aware that 20% of the worlds population LIVE IN THIS ONE COUNTRY?
As a Journalist you should realize that what your story is, is what people who watch it see...you have a responsibility to objective. Otherwise you should get a job at National Enquirer.
  • Does you friend know that he can get fired for appearing on camera???Not from China but from NBC?!?!?!Because yes...the USA TV Broadcaster doesn't want their people talking either. So it is not just China that wants to control things, and it is not just China who does not want to have bad press or ruffle feathers. Did you know that in Daytona Beach, FL they lift the bridges to control the beachside tourists? Only locals with a valid FL license can get across the bridge...sort of like a town VISA. Did you know that almost all the bars and clubs close there for BCC (Black College Reunion) week? The same stuff happens everywhere. get over it.
Ever heard of Voice of America? The US radio broadcast that the US is banned from listening to????Broadcast in 45 countries.
I have watched your videos 3 times and I am sad that you pessimistically crapped on such a great opportunity as a traveler.
You should have done some research on all the HUGE changes a HUGE country has done in such a sort amount of time. Then look at how long it takes the US to change anything!
I'm really sorry if this hurts your feelings but I am really angry about your stories and I hope that people take them with a grain of salt.
  • I wonder if you are going to censor my comments so that your viewers don't see what you don't want them to see.....????
OK, I am going to lay off. I feel bad now.

(By the way, I am a person who is from Washington, DC and have been living in Beijing for a few months, experiencing as much as possible, while my husband works for NBC as well.)
  • danielle - I'm not a journalist. what I am is someone who has been living here for 4+ years and has experienced the country, both good and bad, unlike some who's partner is on NBC's pay scale.
    aricsqueen
  • Or your friend on the NBC pay scale???
If you have experience the good and bad....how about filming the good? After all you are choosing to live here for 4+ years, there must be a reason...
I think you are painting an unfair picture considering that every video you have uploaded happens everywhere in the world every day.
But you are entitled to this, as am I to comment- best of luck-get some Prozac.
  • Wow! I never knew I was banned from listening to the VOA. We better let Washington know so that they can start jamming the signal because it is leaking into California. (Someone has yet to confiscate my S/W radio.) Our great firewall should also block the VOA website, because I can still listen to their stuff on-line. Oh, wait a minute, wrong country.

  • danielle - I am showing what is on-topic for people like myself. you just got here and are living a lifestyle removed from the actual china. I understand what you're trying to say, but until you've actually *experienced* what's going on, you won't know.

I have shown the good things and most people who do any research know that - what I won't put up with is a newbie who just gets here screaming for 'fair'. have your friends been kicked out? sent to prison? is it you having your door knocked on by the police? no. you're new and living the highest of expat lifestyles.

what will you all do after the games?
