On Tuesday, June 17 President Nicolas Sarkozy issued notification that France will make a "major overhaul of the military which includes cutting more than 50,000 defence jobs and boosting intelligence resources." It was with clarification from President Nicolas Sarkozy that France would also be rejoining the NATO in which, France had left in 1966. It is said that "no doubt that France's new defence policy bears the stamp of President Nicolas Sarkozy," as he furthermore "outlined his new strategy to some 3,000 senior officers in Paris."

BBC diplomatic correspondent states that President Nicolas Sarkozy "is the most Atlanticist president to occupy Elysee Palace since the late 1950's," which stirs up many questions of what the new defense program's objectives are when it comes to terrorism. With current meetings with United States President George W. Bush, it is very easy to believe that France is following closely in the footsteps of the United States on the "War on Terrorism."The United States has already started on building its Homeland Security to very suspicious levels by creating the FISA (Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act) which inexplicably whips clean the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Is it hard to believe that France could possible be heading in the same direction as the U.S.?

In what way will cutting troops and increasing intelligence resources really help protect citizens from terrorism, and is France or any country suspect to a terrorist attack? Every single nation is subject to terrorism, there is no one country that can hide behind intelligence resources, if someone wants to attack you they're going to attack you. So will intelligence resources actually fight terrorism, or fight an uprising from happening in France? With the knowledge that France is a close ally with the United States Bush Administration, does this suggest enough probable cause to believe that France's "increase intelligence resources" are not for terrorism, but in fact another use of government power to keep its citizens both controlled and subordinate? The United States has already used its increase intelligence resources to spy more on its citizens that the actual "terrorists," so with France as it's friend what is President Nicolas Sarkozy going to do with his? You are who your friends are.

  • I'm not worried, the last time they won a war was against themselves and even then the military lost.
