Get ready to experience the moon illusion. The solstice moon will rise later today looking much bigger than usual. That is because the full Moon is coming only two days before the beginning of northern summer when the sun is highest in the sky, giving us a low horizon-hugging moon and a stronger big moon illusion...

After all these years, scientists still aren't sure. When you look at the Moon, rays of moonlight converge and form an image about 0.15 mm wide on the retina in the back of your eye. High moons and low moons make the same sized spot, yet the brain insists one is bigger than the other. Go figure."

the one thing that i believe has power over all of us, whether we admit to it or not. sweet obsession, how i love thee moon. i wish i'd be around for the day when it finally breaks free of its orbit. an inch a year isn't fast enough

I've heard the "science" of why moons on the horizon look bigger before. But sometimes the science just doesn't matter. A great big full moon rising is a beautiful part of nature to be enjoyed!!! So tonight just look up at the sky and enjoy the full moon !!
