Is the white stuff in the Martian soil ice or salt? Both could be very significant.

It's cocaine.

the dealers beat us to it!

Or it is some form of silica. Or its the paint being scraped off the robot arm in the process of digging. Who knows? Once the stuf comes back we'll hear or read more definative answers.

The technology behind this is amazing and has incredible commercial applications. I am looking forward to the day when I have a mini Phoenix flying around my house and cleaning my cat's litter box.

why do we waste billions of dollars on going to Mars? do you really think there will be alllll these "scientific breakthroughs"!? NOPE, no one can live on Mars or ever will be able to, lets focus on our own country and planet for that matter WHO CARS ABOUT MARS.

I'm thinking it's the chewy nougat center. We should deep fry that planet.

Hopefully nobody will try to snort Mars.

It could be a reflection. In excavations here on earth, if the conditions are right (digging in virgin clay), an excavator can make a very smooth and reflective surface when the bucket compacts the soil left at the bottom of the hole.

looks like those Martians know how to party!!

its easy to tell if its water ice because after being revealed to the atmosphere water ice will sublime directly from a solid into a vapor as has been evident so far in the phoenix explorer project.
