The music industry of today looks almost nothing like the music industry of 20 years ago. There are a ton of reasons, most of them having to do with digital technology.
Today, if you're an indie musician, the resources for do it yourself marketing -- DIY -- are better than ever.
DIY marketing has become the new science every indie musician must learn. We take a look at a few of those in Los Angeles who are learning it from music business guru Bobby Borg.

yayyyyyy finally it's done!!!

This gets to the heart and the art of the real musician—those out in the trenches busting their asses to get where they want to get. I love this video. Julie and Tania kicked ass producing this. Rock on...

Inspiring story but no one mentioned the power of myspace in the Indy DIY marketing scenerio.
-
Thanks Charlie. You are absolutely right. Thing is, every musician has a MySpace page now! So it's not really new. That's why we didn't dwell on it.

Hello Charlie, I believe the Myspace part got edited out, but was definitely discussed in detail in the footage. While Myspace is very important, I know that the producers wanted to emphasize the less obvious. Thank you so very kindly for the comment. Be well.

Indie music has so much more feel than the alternative. (not alt music corporate music)
I always use rap as the best example of what happens to a great genre when the corps get involved. In the 80's rap music turned into the voice urban youth and a true stand against the establishment. Indie rap talked about racism in police forces and touched on freedom of speech in a way we're now beginning to see happen in front of our eyes. (check out Ice -T's freedom of speech album)
Rap, for the most part has become the equivalent of the disco of the late 70's without voice, and designed of one purpose, market a artist/product.
Keep the indie scene going, if we can find a way to get $ to the artists without forcing them to sign deals with labels that will tell them how to sound, the (music) world will be a better place.-

Major media will never be able or willing to invest the time and money necessary to cover the true evolution of music. The indie scene is where it’s all at. They consistently prove that the highest selling albums are not necessarily the most highly regarded. Just because an artist or band has a large following doesn’t mean that their art, focused upon an individual, will produce a greater affect.
That’s why the internet kicks ass! I don’t have to be member of a particular city, group or scene to find that band that gets me going. The flier has turned into the forum, message board or myspace page. All I need is to be interested in that particular sound and I can find what I need. -
I saw Borg play awhile ago, and was blown away. He is an amazing musician and has a postitive persona. Glad to see he is teaching, and sharing the gift's God gave him.

Julie and Tania, what a great movie it turned out to be. I like the fun quotes, Bobby's positive energy came thru in a great way and I think this is a good reality check for those who only dream of mansions etc like Bobby Borg said.
I like it and feel honored to have been a part of it!
Peace/Ele -
I liked the honesty of the piece, and the fact that the 3 profiles came from such different backgrounds. Great job!

I liked Ele girl's sound. Very developed.
This was a great piece. With all the technology available to the regular consumer today, there's no reason to sit around waiting for someone to give you your big break. Major plus...you get to keep most of the money you generate. -
Interesting take. Thanks for sharing.
