70,000 Spanish truckers strike, blockade border with France: “French and Spanish truckers blockaded roads on the border of south-western France on 9th June in protest at rising fuel prices. In the latest show of distress with fuel prices, Spanish truckers on Monday began a blockade of their country’s border with France, lining up their rigs and slowing them to a crawl to protest the cost of fuel. The strike blocked the highway in both directions in southwestern France. The protest turned ugly when would-be strike-breakers in Spain found their windshields and headlights smashed and their tires slashed. But the Spanish drivers were not the only ones feeling the pinch. French drivers slowed traffic near Bordeaux to demand lower fuel prices, offering a foretaste of a planned national strike by truckers next Monday. Portuguese drivers blocked roads, and in Belgium thousands of labor union members demonstrated in Liège to protest the rising cost of living as a result of fuel costs. Fuel prices have been far higher in Europe than in the United States for many years, largely as a result of fuel taxes imposed after the oil shock in the 1980s. Taxes account for at least half the price motorists pay, and sometimes more than 70 percent.” (LibCom, 06/09/08)

  • this is only the beginning, i will say this again, we do not have a magical supply of oil in the ground. we will run out, its a matter of when.

  • Let the revolt, begin!
GAS PRICES THIS IS NOT THE 'DON'T BUY' GAS FOR ONE DAY, BUT IT WILL SHOW YOU HOW WE CAN GET GAS BACK DOWN TO $1.30 PER GALLON. This was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. If you are tired of the gas prices going up, AND they will continue to rise this summer, take time to read this, please. Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy gas on a certain day' campaign that was going around last April or May! It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $ 5.00 a gallon by summer, and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to 'hurt' ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read on and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.00 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $4.71 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace, not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading, and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all! (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.) ... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am! So trust me on this one. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days !!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting togethe, we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy gas from EXXON or MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK. Keep it going,

Try is the key word. TRY...at least.

  • You'll never see that effort in the United States. The people are too lazy to do anything about anything, yet they still complain when something doesn't go there way.

  • i hope nothing like that happens here but if it does this economy will fall into chaos

  • Mad Max is looking more real every day.
"In the early 21st century the United States invaded the Middle East in the Great Oil War." Chaos reigned in riots over food and fuel, until the great steel cities just ran out of juice.
    Scary huh?

  • It's time to stop with the old ways and old methods. If anything we should drop majority of it, maybe a clean wipe of the earth's surface wouldn't be such a bad idea!

  • No one is offering solutions to high gas prices. All we get is excuses and the run around. Take time to visit this web site. if you want to see a solution to the gas situation visit http://www.wesaidnomore.com. This site offers a way where we citizens can take back some sort of control and exercise our power and rights as consumers and voters. It's a little radical but it will work. That's "We said no more"
    Thanks

  • global demand for fuel is rising exponentially. by the day, hundreds of thousands of people in China, India, and other nations are ushered into the middle class as their economies grow. middle class citizens wants suburbia, they want cars, they want name brands, they want lots of fuel.

"suburbia fever" hit the US after WWII and spread like an STD at a public high school.

we have to remember that there are nations with populations topping a billion who have never had the personal wealth of Americans.

we cry out "we've all been driving to work separately for years and we've been buying name brand foods and products for years and we've doing this and that for years and we need to change our ways and cut back!"

this is a valid point to make, it's just that other countries can't say the same thing. they're JUST coming out of poverty, they want everything we've had for 60 years and that's understandable. In India and China especially, we will only see MORE cars, more name brands, more bottled water, more suburbia, more usage, more consumption, etc.

we can change our ways all we want. we can conserve and use alternative energy and change our lifestyles and completely embrace to the green movement and will it help? yes, of course it will. it will do a lot of good.

but this needs to be a global movement. it's going to be a TOUGH sell to tell families just coming out of poverty "no, don't buy a car! don't move out to the suburbs like you've always wanted to!"

    a tough sell indeed.

America needs to be a great example to world.
and we've got a long way to go.
  • SEE NOW, THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE U.S. AND OVERSEAS. NOT LIKE WE DON'T PROTEST, BUT, I HAVE NOT SEEN ANYONW MARCHING OVER FUEL PRICES HERE. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME PEOPLE IN AMERICA SAW THIS TYPE OF UNITYWHEN IT CAME TO GAS PRICES? AND WE'RE HURTING TOO SO DESPERATELY. $4.08
