Election reform for $6!?? Yes.

Congress would only have to spend $6 per citizen per year to publicly fund each and every election for the House, the Senate and the White House. When you consider that "pork barrel" projects cost every one of us more than $200 last year alone, it’s no contest.

Think of it. With public funding, wealthy special interests and their hired lobbyists would no longer have a commanding influence over our politics and government. Instead of begging for campaign donations, candidates would spend their time communicating with voters. Once elected, our leaders would be free to focus on our nation's challenges rather than having to worry about financing their next campaign. And there's no doubt that more of our most able leaders would run for federal office when the ability to finance a campaign isn't such a daunting obstacle.

Take action!
Prompt candidates and representatives to support sound election reform!

  • Things need to change so that truely, every vote counts. As it stands, your votes don't go as far as they should as other people make the final decisions (ie the electoral college etc).

  • I'm not even American and I like it.
  • Too bad most American are sleepwalking their way through life. We should have MILLIONS of people DEMANDING THIS... But everyone's on here transfixed by Kanye West being late for his crappy show.

  • Who the hell red-lilghted it? Why? I just don't get it...

Is there a Current member that works for Diebold? Katherine Harris? Do you have a profile?

    Wow.

  • another recent suggestion is that all such offices... prez, house, senate, etc... at federal AND state levels [governor, etc.,] be set to ONE six-year term with NO consecutive reelection possible.

    >>>long enough in office to get something done if they're really there to do it...
    >>>no value to screwing around and immediately running for re-election, 'cause there isn't any chance...
    >>>add a few flavors of "can't work for any lobbying organizations EVER after office...

    and things get interesting, too.

  • Yes the $6 bucks and term limits would be great.

  • For now I just keep funnelling my lunch money to Obama. I think it's more important to get him in office, and not McCain.

  • This idea of public funding, is good...it would help get rid of lobby riff-raff too. But I 'm not convinced about term limits going to six years. If someone snaked their way in through clever lies (sound familiar?) then we'd be stuck with them for all that torturous time...(bush=auuuugghhh)

If we keep this before the public eye and not let it die out, then, there's a good chance that we can, eventually, make it happen. There's no doubt that we seriously need election reform...it's just a matter of sticking to it until we get it...

First, we have to eliminate countless abuses of power and corruption, then about 3500 lobbyists and a long list of special interests vyiing for a seat at the table or an appointment with financial destiny...too many rats in the grain bin, leaves no seed to sow...

Obama's getting my lunch money too...

  • Changes like this are long overdue & have to start somewhere. So why not here & now. It's the only way a blatantly corrupt system has any chance of a major overhaul.

As Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

  • Big corporate money has no place in politics (or, at least, it shouldn't).

Thanks for the post, and the link.
