Rape is being used as an ethnic cleansing in Darfur. An estimated 100% of women and children as young as four, have been raped by militia. Some even more than once a day while gathering firewood.
Over 20 babies per month are abandoned by their victim mothers, who are not speaking up and claiming their rapes or abandoned children.
Men are afraid of speaking up, defending or accompanying the women in going out and doing chores in fear of being killed for doing so.
~~~~
I hope that these babies are finding good homes through adoption and something is done soon.
The less that these women say, the worse it will become. I understand that it must be terrifying and painful and degrading, but it's so scary and sad to know that the women of Darfur have come to accept this as their life ...
It is terrible to learn of the rape in Darfur. Women aren't safe to leave the refugee camps to gather firewood. I couldn't imagine a day in their shoes. But how can you get an estimation of 100% of women in Darfur are rape victims? I'd like to know how one could obtain such information, as the facts in Darfur tend to be scarce because of the insecurity in the region.
Some relief workers believe this to be the case, but it isn't neccessarily a good statistic. None the less it goes to show just how terrible the situation in Darfur has become.
" Humanitarian group Refugees International said in a report last year that rape was "an integral part of the pattern of violence that the government of Sudan is inflicting upon the targeted ethnic groups in Darfur."
Some relief workers say that almost every woman living in aid camps has been raped or become a victim of gender-based violence."-
This is such an important issue. I hope this makes it to TV. Thank you for posting this as it gets not nearly the amount of attention it should get. When women cannot even leave these camps to get water (which they shouldn't have to do in the first place) without being raped or beaten or killed, where has humanity gone? The situation in Darfur is dire and yet the international community sits on its hands obsessed with the American presidential race as if that is the only thing happening in this world.
've only recently learned about the events in Darfur many years after this genocide started. I did a speech for my school about the terrible living conditions and suffering that these people are STILL going through. The more research I did the more depressing it became. There are many causes to the genocide but I found only one conclusion, more awareness=more action.
