E-10 ruins fuel economy for vehicles.

With gas prices soaring, people are concerned about how their cars are faring on the road. Of course, gas guzzlers are suffering the worst during this $4+ gas world, but so is the common person. You see, some stations are mixing Ethanol with regular gasoline in small amounts (known as E-10). And there have been reports that this is effecting fuel economy in a negative way.

This is just one recent story where people note the drop in fuel economy of vehicles because fo the E-10 mix. There are others that can be found doing a Google search. The earliest report I found was from 2006.

  • I'm followign this up with another link -- there was a study conducted in 2005 that noted E-10 gets and average loss of 15% of fuel economy. Higher quantities also produced loses but not as great.

  • One last reference link, this is to a simple discussion conducted last year among fuel conservation people on a Gas Price web site...

With this being common knowledge, why isn't the media covering it with the E-10 blend being forced down our throats?

  • Summary results: (from domesticfuel.com)
    Miles per gallon
The three vehicles averaged only 1.5% lower mileage with E10, 2.2% lower mileage with E20, 5.1% lower mileage with E30, and increased mileage of 1.7% when using the specially denatured E10 blend.
