Coldplay's latest single, Viva La Vida, bears a striking resemblance to another song by the indie band, Creaky Boards. Coincidence or theft? You tell us.

The full Creaky Boards video comparing their tune to Coldplay's.

I don't know what to say. Well, I hope Creaky Boards get just as much exposure. I hope their track is available on Itunes too. I always like to compare originals, if that is the case, to the new versions. But of course, originals are better.

Yeah 'The Songs I Didn't Write' says it all. Too media savvy for their own good but not savvy enough to shave that moustache. What a crap waste of their 15. Muddy Waters had more on the Stones than this.
-
Sorry Creaky Boards...I don't believe you.

It's sad that a band that was so honest about being inspired by other bands (see video) is actually accused of true plagiarism. The two songs are absolutely nothing a like. This is not a real story. It's a story because someone says it's a story and I personally don't think a good TV network should repeat it.
Creaky Boards is accusing Coldplay of copying the melody of a line and a half. That's not plagiarism. It's especially sad because if they did steal the melody and slight inflection of a single line, they are probably the only band that would admit it. Coldplay said Speed of Sound, easily one of their best songs, was a failed attempt at a cover!
I guess the lesson is don't tell the truth. Just shut up about the process and inspiration or people will accuse you of things and call you names. We live in a shallow, stupid culture that worships rumor and half truths. The truth means nothing. The medium is the truth... I stole that from Marshall McLuhan :D

idk...at points it sounds similar, but during other parts, it doesn't sound alike at all...
im a musician and i can say for myself, i wish i didn't listen to music sometimes, because i'll write a line or hum a melody and i'll think to myself....'did i make this up? or did i hear that somewhere' ... then i wrack my brain tryin to figure out where i heard it, i listen to every cd i've listened to in the past week tryin to find it, and i usually don't, but 1 time i did find it and i was like I KNEW I COULDNT HAVE COME UP WITH THAT ON MY OWN!! ITS FROM THAT ONE ELTON JOHN SONG!
so if Chris Martin and the boys did take it from the Creaky Boards, i think it was an honest mistake, as they seem to be really honest gents

Listen Hoss, don't be hatin' on the Legend of Zelda. The songs from the series are classics. I can see why Hoepner is making that connection, since the fairy music is light, atmospheric, and, in my opinion, calming. You should devote an episode to the influence of the seminal video games themes and other songs have on the modern music scene. Not to tell you how to do your job or anything....

ill bet a dime this artist once said that he plays music just for the enjoyment. and look at him here trying to get credit. or maybe im just wrong and should be slapped in the face. who knows? its just a guess

Its doesn't sound quite right to me, I honestly can barely hear any similarity, and how many other countless songs have had tonal similarities and whatnot. I mean look at the hip hop industry? How many old 70s,80s, 90s songs have been 'looped' as a background melody for some rapper to rhyme atop of? Can we say Kanye West? Its still amazing how many times I'll hear my mom or my father say "Oh God, they got that song too... I remember back in the day..." and so forth. But with this current situation, Creaky Boards vs Cold Play, in all honesty it just sounds like at a certain point in the Creaky Boards song he just hit the same vocal note in a different way. Listening to Viva La Vida, it just sounds so different that even if ,as coincidental as a it sounds, Chris Martin hit the same exact vocal notes, its done in a way where it honestly sounds nothing like the that other song. And lets face it, if Cold Play wanted to be so blatant enough as to steal your song(pitch or w/e) they've got more than enough money to buy it, loop it and sample the hell outta of it if they wanted really. I say thats the worst use of your 15 you could've done. :/

There are so many better things to steal
-
it sounds quite similar : \
but i say coincidence. -
they sound similar but i think it was more coincidence. i dont think cold play would even need to steal a song from this band anyway.

Douglas! I think you rock! What about the part with the Zelda Theme?? hahaha LOL.
Regards from Venezuela! -
I really like this album.
But I remember the first time I saw the video, and all I thought was Huh, that looks like U2.
But apparently, a lot of things remind me of U2.
I don't even listen to them much.-
