The world's population will reach 7 billion in 2012, even as the global community struggles to satisfy its appetite for natural resources, according to a new government projection.

  • As long as there isn't some horrendous catastrophe...

  • It'll be interesting to see how the world deals with over 7 billion people seeing as how we are struggling to deal with what we have now. I hope that we can find a way to slow our growth so that we can find ways to deal with the extra people without causing more damage to the planet.

  • 2012??? watch esoteric agenda on youtube. weird.

  • Thankfully our leaders create reasons to go to war with eachother to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

  • "The world's population surpassed 6 billion in 1999, meaning it will take only 13 years to add a billion people."

That is crazy. In 1945 the world population was 2.3 billion.

I don't think the earth can sustain this many people, especially with how we manage finite resources.

    population reaches 7 billion,
2012 sounds like it should be quite an exciting year!

  • In 2012, when you're one in a million, there are 7,000 people exactly like you.

  • Go on, grab our attention with a great title
Its like growing population is an indirect, naturally constructed time bomb, dealing in massive poverty, famine, and war rather than bursting flames.
    How do we defuse it?
Well love for your fellow man sure wont help.

This is a bittersweet prediction because it shows that the length of life has increased through medicines and vaccines. However, we do not know how many people the Earth can sustain so perhaps the quality of life will decrease as the quantity increases. Thank goodness we're starting to take more environmental precautions now in an effort to lower what 7 billion people may do to the planet.

  • That such a huge population can occur does seem to disprove the theory of a Malthusian Catastrophe which has been predicted ever since the 1800's but hasn't happened yet.

Mostly because of what Bucky Fuller called "doing more with less" and using more efficient methods of design to manage resources.

  • I firmly believe as our population goes up, our (and every other creature on this planet) long run chance of survival goes down!
  • is that including the baby boom we seem to be having with this generation?? i see pergnant everywhere...celebrities, friends, bosses...im sure its not only florida, eh? i guess 7 billion would estimate all that...

  • Wow, Bad religion were way off.

  • Population is exponential. We can't stop people from reproducing. None of these problems will go away in a period of years. We just need to take a serious look at our resources and redistribute them appropriately.
  • Well most western (i hate that term, it's really the economic North) have a less than 2 children per couple ratio meaning population decline, except for imegration.
    Owwmykneecap
  • Just because one place has negative growth doesn't mean the whole world is that way. Sure it may curb some of the overpopulation problems, but only for a short while.
  • Well look on the bright side of things. When we overpopulate the planet and all starve from lack of food and water, that will leave some room open for some other species to evolve and replace us. The planet is fine. It will be around for billions of more years. Humans are the ones with the problem. Were the ones that are "shooting ourselves in the foot" so to speak....

  • It's a HUGE challenge... People are born and we die... There is a natural order of things. If the earth cannot sustain us, Mother nature will eliminate us somehow... Such is life. Our challenge is to respect, sustain, and appreciate it as best we can.

  • Unless birth control methods are adopted, in earnest, by EVERY nation we are going to witness an utterly devastating human crisis in our lifetime. People are starving to death on a daily basis as it is now. What's it going to be like when 10, 15, or 20 billion humans need to be fed?

  • I've already decided not to have kids.

Why would I want to raise a child in this fucked up world?
  • Everyone seems as if this a a horrible thing, like we are some invaders out to destroy the planet or something, like we're against nature. WE ARE NATURE! it is our sole instinct to reproduce, like any other animal or creature. We could fit much more than 7 billion on this planet, but we have to realize that not everyone needs all the extra ammenties that is availible in this world.

  • What are we going to do next? Where will we go? I think we will be forced to live on the ocean or even another planet.

  • Human Population = 7,000,000,000

    http://math.berkeley.edu/~galen/popclk.html

Whether it’s the Dec. 21, 2012 winter solstice doomsday predicted by the uncannily ancient & accurate Mayan calendar, a global cataclysm from the polarity of the poles changing (among many potential natural disasters) or a celestial shift like the sun reaching the galactic equator of the Milky Way, tumultuous times of colossal proportions for the Earth are becoming more of a reality with each passing day. How are we ever going to feed, clothe & shelter this many people with the Earth’s resources being squandered & profitably mismanaged by a few greedy corporations leeching off of billions of people?

The number of people the Earth can expect to sustain is finite and the timing of hitting this population milestone seems to fit too neatly to be ignored into this “beyond our wildest dreams scenario”. Could this be the tipping point, becoming clearer, that unless we start paying closer attention & take positive action from the signals being sent by the world around us, we-not the Mayans-may be dooming ourselves to extinction.
    Sleep tight kids.

  • As long as there's no catastrophes?! R U out of ur mind? This is a catastrophe in and of itself. Species of animals like polar bears are becomong extinct every day. Global warming, the destruction of the rainforests and the oceans all of this is directly due to the fact that there are already too mny people living on this planet. The one thing we definately don't need more of is people. What's worse is people are living longer at the same time more people r being born. There is less land and food for the other living things on this planet. Also countries like India and China are becoming more industrialized and more people driving cars etc. the Earth will not be able to sustain life of any kind much longer. So when they talk about pro-choice being wrong they must be insane. We do not have room for wanted children let alone unwanted. Also, these selfish morons getting in vitro and having 6,7,8 kids at one time. No one shld be having more than 1 and if u can't get pregnant be socially responsible not selfish adopt.
    marisa_bklyn
  • and in EVERY case, when a country has achieved a "high" standard of living, their birth rate has dropped.

    every time.

most "industrialized" or "advanced" countries have negative growth rates today.... too low to even sustain their current population numbers.

soon they'll be trying to boost birth rates so they don't get invaded and taken over by other countries with high birth rates.

and when governments get involved directly, you have the distortions that the Chinese are currently having impact their society and culture.

of course, there IS ONE "population" which wants to grow without bound AND take over the earth, and they don't even claim "one country" as their center... they want ALL of the countries as "their own."

Malthus was an idiot. we have much more to fear today than what's listed above....

  • Natural order. Stop poverty, AIDS , disease.Well these things happen for a reason ,it a natural control. Its nice to say you have a cause, but maybe efforts should be shifted!WE ARE SMARTER!!!
