Christianity 'could die out within a century'

"More than half of Britons think Christianity is likely to have disappeared from the country within a century, according to a survey.

Research by the Orthodox Jewish organisation Aish found that just over a third of people thought religions like Christianity and Judaism would still be practiced in Britain in 100 years' time.

Although four in 10 people said they would choose to be a member of the Christian religion, almost the same number said they would rather practice no religion at all."

  • I think it will be even less than a century. It's a generational thing, and our generation cares not for religion anymore.

We like myspace and Lilly Allen.

  • She's bigger than Jesus I hear. No pun intended.

  • Please! Agnostic and atheistic detractors of faith have been making the disappearing Christianity claim for time immemorial. And, still, Jesus is still around.

  • This is right under those fanatics claiming the end of the world.

This is a good example of ethnocentricity.

I suppose they also think everyone has bad teeth.

  • It all started with the Beatles becoming bigger than Jesus!

But really, the big J isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

  • Right, while your at it, invent a new calendar and start the year count over. Because the last time I checked , its all running on Jesus time.

  • That's like saying the Pope will be moving to Bora Bora next week. Possible with imagination, but never gonna happen.

  • i don't think it's the actual religion that the people don't agree with. I think its the people of the religion (read zealots) who curse and forsake all others to hell because someone else might not be christian. Most of the people who refuse to tolerate homosexual people are right wing christians damning everyone different to hell for their sins instead of trying to inderstand them. They hide behind a book and a religion to justify their own insecurities and fears instead of thinking about it rationally. i don't recall jesus ever walking up to people believed to be sinners and tell them that their going to hell. I recall him helping them and understanding them. I don't recall him dying on the cross for just straight people sins or just christians. He died for everyone.

But, the main thing I just absolutely loathe is that they march up and down the street holding a book that states that miracles are real and anything is possible and tell people who choose to love someone of the same gender that love between them is IMpossible....

  • All this article is saying is that Christianity in Britain may lose so much ground that it will become financially unviable and may retreat from the nation, given current religious trends.

By the by chillwillNJ, many historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, and the like have been using the Common Era (B.C.E./C.E.) system of dating for years now. Granted it's an altered version of the Gregorian Calender, but it replaces the need to come up with a new method of measuring the years. We could adopt the more accurate and precise Mayan Calendar though...

  • Phillyharper,

    A generational thing?

    I don't think so...

A religion that has been around for more than 2,000 years is pretty multi-generational I think:)

Now, I wasn't born yesterday but you are definitely showing your age:)

Better be careful of that it will haunt you:)
  • Realistically, I think that will never happen. It's been around for so long already and endured so many different periods in history. I don't think our generation is an exception.

  • People are always going to need to "cling" to something JEsus and his muppet pals are not gonna be gone for a long ass time.

  • I don't think it will die out, but it is definitely changing. In light of how so called Christians in our country spit bile and intolerance, I think a lot of people are just getting tired of it. It's the New World, ha, where Christians, Muslims, Taoist actually speak to each other instead of praying for fiery condemnation by their respective deities.

  • Religions have a life span.

When religion, religious preference, affiliation, etc. is made more important than morality, people, kindness, consideration of / for others, etc. - you know it's dying. It's the unanticipated consequence of those who are ignorant enough to go there. It hastens it's demise.

I seriously doubt Christianity will die anytime soon. That is manipulative propaganda of competing religions.

You see, what has been done to Christianity in the United States of Christians, I mean America, is an insidious long term attack to undermine Christian's pride and self-esteem. Christianity has been under assault for decades by "competing" religion(s), and for sometime, Christians have been under attack financially - and allowed to be EXPLOITED by ignorant politicians who are hostile to American values, our Constitution, the rule of law, personal integrity, morals, civilized societies, etc., regardless of religious affiliation.

Wonder why so much of the wealth is in the hands of so few? This is why - coupled with greed and stupidity.

Religions are not an end in themselves. The purpose of religion is to guide people, to serve as a road map - not serve as a means to attack people - as it has often been used by those lacking morality - psychopaths that is.

  • I definitely think religions will have to evolve as they have over the years. Whether it's moving on from religious wars, slavery, racism, sexism, etc, they'll change their rules as necessary to survive. Agreeable or not, they'll be around for a very long time.

  • We've been here for 2000yrs and have always been told we would die out, and yet here we remain.

  • I doubt it, and it will never die out totally.

    But fade into irrelevance, yes.

As long as people are free have a nice standard of living, religion becomes an afterthought to most.

A nice bit of hardship and religion thrives.

  • Christians - stand tall!

To "treat others as you want to be treated" transcends time and religious affiliation.

To "forgive and forget" isn't said for the benefit of the "victimizer", but for the victim. It returns the power to the victim and allows the victim to move on - easier said than done I realize.

    Acceptance and tolerance, again virtuous.

You can see the consequence different religious teachings bring by looking at yourselves, at the United States of America. At how we accept, embrace and even delight in different cultures.

Now, look around the globe and see the life and death struggles of people who are locked in never ending battles without a prayer.

Who do you want to be? Want that miserable life and death existence in the United States? Didn't think so.

Christians - Embrace. You are good.

  • Christianity is just plain awful the worst thing to happen to humanity next to the nuclear bomb (and if I wanted to take the time, I could explain how christianity actually lead to the atomic bomb, but thats pointless cause the christians won't hear it way up there on their pedestals). Im so glad to see it go, this is WONDERFUL news! structured religion is inherently self-contradicting, but this particular brand of crutch is pure freakin evil. To the pro-christians, maybe you need another holocaust to rid the world of competing religions? seemed to work for you guys the first time.

  • This story is so much hot air, like much of what passes for Christianity.

  • It took was one leader, Constantine, to change Rome from non-Christian to Christian. Christians then took the same approach the Roman empire employed to “purify” those non-believers, INTIMIDATION. The main question, how many people where tortured/killed in the past 1,500 years to perpetuate Christianity? Thousands, millions?

(I do not belong to any form of religious or cultish organization.) I’ve recently heard the argument that Scientology has not been around for the same amount of time, so it is not as accepted as Christianity. True on the timeframe, BUT both use Intimidation as THE primary source of it’s advancement.

People in England are sick of being Intimidated by the State run church and are revolting against it. This is starting to happen more on-line than ever before, i.e. this story.

Intimidating someone else is second nature for Christians, turning the other cheek is not an option. Watch to see how many attack this post and you’ll get your answer.

  • It's amazing what people do in the name of religion. It isn't the religion that does these things - the religion isn't a person or even a sentient life form.

Psychopaths do horrible things and attempt to justify or give plausibility to their criminal actions using all sorts of justifications.

Unfortunately, many people don't realize a person who choses immoral actions in the name of religion, "security" or whatever, is immoral and often a psychopath.

I'll add, that a legal system which focuses on the letter of the law and not the spirit of the law, enables the unscrupulous to manipulate YOU and ME for personal gain - i.e., prosecuting and imprisoning Americans (who shouldn't be) while allowing others to escape prosecution who truly should be prosecuted.

Want and example? All those who have betrayed, lied to, mislead and manipulated Americans for personal gain and profit at the expense of our Country.

What America is doing in the world at the moment, isn't being done by Christians, not with the consensus of Americans. Clearly, we overwhelmingly oppose the war and all the evil deeds done in the name of the United States of Corporations.

It doesn't take much to see who is behind what is happening, who stands to gain, and who is involved.

The whole deal about keeping America the dominate world power is a hoax sold to Congress to go along with the hi-jacking of America. It's BS.

  • I think it's good for Religion to change throughout the years just as long as it's headed towards being better. If not then it's not really working in accordance to what they claim.

Religion has done (and I'm lumping most together) some horrible things. I can totally understand why there are people that find anyone in a religion to be mindless. That doesn't mean I agree I just understand how they can come to that conclusion.

As for Christianity going away I don't see how that can happen. There has always been some form of it throughout History. I don't think it'll happen.

  • watch this comment being used here, here, here and here
Organized religion has been the crux of most all wars ever fought.

I can't see that an end to something that's been so bastardized and abused would be such a bad thing.

  • why do people make judgments of whole religions based on a extreme few? I read an interview with a "Christian" author once and when he was asked if he was a Christian he said no. His reason for doing so was because he said that if you went out into the streets and asked 10 different people what "Christian" meant to them you would no doubt get 10 different responses so why label yourself a Christian when too one person it represents hate and intolerance while to someone else it means something completely different? I believe often times the people you see in the news parading around outside with signs condemning what they dont understand dont even understand the real true teachings of Christianity, they follow the rules and doctrines as opposed to Jesus' teachings of love and understanding. I am a "Christian" by traditional labels if you are wondering.

  • Its about time, and all the boneheaded sheep should go with it.

I really do hope they get raptured so the rest of us can get on with the business of living.

  • As long the young keep getting indoctrinated there's no chance. Some will get away as they get older and develop their on views. But that is what keeps all religions going. They always get to the kids before any rational thinkers do.

These comments seem to point to that as more fact than fiction.

  • It would be nice to see it go.....If only America would follow suit. Then the world would be much more tolerant.

  • Modern Christianity is a portrait of what thousands of years of political corruption looks like. It wasn't always about bile spewing. Hunger for power, control, and money is ultimately what corrupted the church. It's not about instilling fear into the hearts of it's members but sadly that's how it's survived for so long. It makes people feel guilty. When they feel guilty, they feel insecure. When they feel insecure they can use their bible as a weapon to take the attention off themselves and onto godless heathens that "threaten their existence" . Bible thumping is a diversion to hide a "Christian's" guilty conscience. But it's all about power and fear is a great way to get control over someone. The church is finally losing control and I think it's great!

  • Just about all religions that existsed PRIOR to the invention of Judiasm have loooong since ended. Why shouldn't this one?

No one is practicing ANY of the old Roman religions, the old Greek religions, the old Egyptian religions, the old Viking religions, etc.

The few exceptions seem to be religions that, frankly, are more humane and spiritually mature such as taoism, Zen -- Eastern religions.

The religions that are more spiritual and more like philosophy have a role in a modern society.

Thor and Zeus really don't have a serious religious role in a 21st century world because they are waaaay to backward to be practical.

Christanity is a lot like old school hunter-gatherer religions -- nontribesman are evil, kill your enemies with a club, everyone must die, be nice only to those who worship same god as tribe, grunt! grunt!

Um, yeah. That type of primitive, backward old school religion went out of style waaay back when the Aztecs tore the heart out of the last remaining virgin and said, "You know what? I'm beginning to think this wasn't such a great idea! There must be a better way."

If it wasn't for MTV-ifying our national religion (c'mon, Christanity is our national religion and we all know it) I doubt it would have lasted even this long.

Ending the practice of human sacrifice only made our lives better.

Ending the Witch trials only made our lives better.

Transitioning Christianity out of our lives and replacing it with something more spiritually mature and enlightened can only be to our benefit.

  • It's good to see old dogmas go away, being replaced by a new generation which doesn't really call it a religion, just a "faith". Even though I consider faith a meat limitation for me, some people use it to their advantage. Just make sure you control it, not the other way around.
