Human activity fueling weird weather, U.S. says

Thursday's report from the U.S. Climate Change Science Program is a synthesis of the latest research on extreme weather in the U.S. and comes after nearly six months that saw a record number of tornadoes, unusual winter warmth and record-setting precipitation in many regions.

It comes as the most extreme weather event so far this year, the Midwestern floods, continues to unfold.

The report said there is strong evidence the increasing frequency of extreme rain, heat, drought and tropical storms is caused by global climate change.

Most scientists believe that human activity is causing or accelerating global warming.

"Changes in some weather and climate extremes are attributable to human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases," the study authors concluded.

The report also concluded that:

• Human-caused warming likely has caused much of the increase in average and extreme temperatures observed in the U.S. over the past 50 years.

• Heavy precipitation events have increased over the past 50 years. That's consistent with increases in atmospheric water vapor associated with human-caused increases in greenhouse gases.

• Droughts are becoming more severe in some regions, though there are no clear national trends.

• The power and frequency of Atlantic hurricanes have increased substantially in recent decades, likely driven by human-caused increases in sea-surface temperatures.

However, the number of hurricanes making landfall does not appear to have increased over the past century.

For some reason Current is stating this url could not be found. So I'm posting it here.
Edit: The Washington Post printed the same story so I posted that link in the original space.

  • Unusually warm winter I don't know where you live but it was damn cold in the north all winter, and one of the latest springs we have had in a long time. It would appear to me that the planet is cooling but I suppose that is also caused by global warming. Their has always been extreme weather. Man is pretty arrogant to think that he can change the temperature of the planet. The planets climate has changed in the past, colder periods and warmer periods. Did man cause that too? In the seventy's scientists were worried that an ice age was going to happen then their was that cfc ozone layer scare. What happened to them issues? Could it be that people overreacted? I have a feeling that man made global warming is the same kind of issue a lot of hype from young people and it is being proven false if you would just do some research.

  • Oh please, "if YOU would just do some research"... a line by someone who doesn't know what else to say. If you have done the research to prove this scientific report wrong, let it rip. And while you're at it research climate change... again, it is about more than warmer temperatures. That,"it was damn cold up here in the North" BS doesn't fly anymore. Tell that to people who live in the Arctic watching the ice melt.

  • Just explain to me then the climate change that has occurred on earth before the industrial revolution. Who and what caused that. The fact is that it would take a lot more co2 then we could ever produce to change the temperature even one degree changing solar activity is far more likely to cause climate change. Maby you should do some research your self.
