Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has fuelled the growing rift between Opec oil-producing nations ahead of a major summit this weekend, by threatening to block supplies to European countries.
As angry protests broke out in China over a sharp rise in its fuel prices today, Chavez said he was enraged by new rules passed by the EU parliament on Wednesday, aimed at standardising the process by which member nations deport illegal immigrants. They contain contentious measures such as providing for long detention periods.

Will that extend to Ken's bendy bus deal I wonder?

It's interesting that EU is doing something about illegal immigration while America countinues to let any and everyone in and people wonder why there's so many problems and crime.
It doesn't have to be those that are not here legally who are causing the problems but because of a select few that are bad we have issues around the border. Murder and kidnapping happen and do not make the news.
I like Mexico and I don't mind living near them. I just think it's unfair that they keep their borders protected from illegal entry from central America but fail to do so for entry into America.
As for the EU I hope they have something powerful to pull on this fool, because he may be dictator where he lives but he sure the hell ain't dictator of the world.
Egomaniac. I can't believe people stick up for him. Hitler also was good for the German Economy. stating someone is good for such doesn't make them good person. Makes them a shrewed person. -
And so he should.

Yo J_Jammer,,,,
Chavez is the three times elected socialist President and not a dictator. Venezualan are one of the top ten oil producers in the world and that is perhaps why America have made numerous attempts to over throw Chavez.
Whats yours is yours, whats his is his. -
He made people vote for him or he'd shoot certain people. Elected, sure. But at what cost?
Why people stand up for him I will never understand. -
Purdey ,
Do you really believe the elections in Venezuela were legitimate?
Chavez is a dictator, he might put on fake elections for the world to view but he controls the entire election process. He uses force to control the citizens of his country and executes any that go against him. But i'm sure you think he's a great guy because he hates Bush and the U.S. -
seems funny how so many people and gov't officials have a huge problem with chavez, but when it comes to china they have no problem with harsh political crackdowns and torture. every leader is a shade of gray, except obama, he's white as can be.

hmm Obama is white as can be...

Their elections may not have been the greatest display of free democracy, but thier oil is their oil.
We would not give to two damns about humanitarian issues if they did not have any oil. -
Chávez promotes a political doctrine of democratic socialism and Latin American integration. He is also a critic of neoliberalism, globalization and United States foreign policy.
Chávez has acted against the Washington Consensus by supporting alternative models of economic development, and has advocated cooperation among the world's poor nations, especially those in Latin America.
Unsurprisingly then the government of the United States, claim Chávez to be a threat to democracy in Latin America.
Latin American democracy? Lets not forget Nicaragua. Washington funneled money, weapons and other supplies to right wing death squads. And the death toll was staggering–more than 70,000 political killings in El Salvador, more than 100,000 in Guatemala, 30,000 killed in the contra war in Nicaragua. In Washington, the forces carrying out the violence were called “freedom fighters.” This is how Ronald Reagan described the Contras in Nicaragua: “They are our brothers, these freedom fighters and we owe them our help. They are the moral equal of our founding fathers.” -
Yep, and lets not forget Augusto Pinochet, a US-backed dictator who led the coup d'état against democratically elected President Salvador Allende in 1973.
To second what Purdey and dearmat23 already said, U.S. don't give a poo about humanitarian issues or democracy. These are nothing but words used as an excuse to bully and exploit other nations.
I don't know what kind of informations Americans receive through media but it must have been extremely biased. While Chavez is far from perfect, he's probably as good as it gets when it comes to protecting his country and people from being exploited by other countries (read: US of A)
The US govt would gain much more respect from me and probably the rest of the world if they one day should decide to attack and overthrow someone like Robert Mugabe, that's a real criminal.... Chavez is, on the other hand, just trying to improve the living standard of the poor in his country. There's a reason why he was elected by the majority repeatedly
Watch "The war on democracy", a brilliant documentary by John Pilger

I can find more sources, if any americans should still be in doubt, but here is one:

And don't forget, when Chavez tried to run for a permanent presidential position, he was voted DOWN and he accepted that mandate from his own people...
None of these players are perfect, but look at their motivations. It is their oil, and regardless of the policies that he doesn't like and uses to justify withholding said oil, its that nation's business, not ours.
I'd like to hear from people who have been in Venezuela, and what they think... -
Does everyone remember when the "CHRISTIAN" Pat Robertson said that this man should be assasinated? What about love and forgiveness Pat.
-
Its their oil. They can do whatever they want with it.
Its the rich world countries fault to addict themselves into something that is not on their own country.
Gas is $0.13 a gallon in Venezuela. -
Because of Sugar.

I belive that a country's natural resources are theirs. No if ands or buts. If a country doesn't want to do business with another country noone else in the world has the right to force them. As a leader, unless someone in this forum is living in Venezuela, I don't think anyone can really comment about how his actions are effecting his people. He is standing up for what he believes is right. just as our own president did IE invading another country filled with oil (which has not benefited anyone, unless you own an oil company) and not one WMD. If Chavez chooses to pull all of his resources so that countries can't buy them, that should be his choice. Just as in the US we cannot go to Cuba or trade with them because of communist practices by a dictator our government doesn't agree with, but countries like China that do far worse to there own people and are communist as well, basically now own america. I am begining to believe that much of what is shown in the news today is more propaganda than news.

I urge everyone to urge everyone to urge every single company which products use/depend on Oil, to look for another Solution.
Chavez thinks he can play with people just for having oil. Actually, Chavez even meet some days ago with the Iranian President!! -
The only way the world can give importance to a country like Venezuela is because of their oil. Chavez knows that and he uses it to further hes agenda of uniting socialism in the world.
I dont see the problem with that.
At least he doenst flies 100 planes while saying he will attack some country. -
id take chavez over bush any day
-
Viva la Chavez!
Am reading a lot of ignorance on Chavez and Venezuela. See wiki for more info if you's like.
The short:
Ven. and most of So Amer were and are dominated by old Euro-crats who sold out their resources and give back pennies to the poor. The poor are not Euro in ancestry, but are the ancestors of the original peoples of the Americas.
Chavez is LOVED by the poor people and some of the middle class (virtually no middle class), but hated by the upper class who were exploiting the county and giving back pennies to the majority poor. Chavez tried to over throw a corrupt President in 1992. He failed, but in 1992 the Venezuelan congress impeached the corrupt President. Funny how Venezuela did it, but we the USA don't unless a BJ is involved. After getting out of prison, Chavez entered a peaceful political agenda and is now Pres. In 2002 the right-wing upper class tried to get the military to over throw him, but millions of citizens protested in the capital, and gave Chavez back his government. Thus if anyone states that Chavez is a dictator or is in power due to voter fraud, it is a lie used by the right wing elite, period.-

Anyone here is welcome to dislike Chavez, and he is no angel, but don't lie about him. Plus, there is nothing wrong with using the truth card. Go to wiki or some other neutral site and read about Chavez yourself.
To the RW blog spammers:
Lying is not a family value.-
