BioSolar focused on petroleum-free solar cells

BioSolar has been cited in recent news media reports exploring the increasing demand for bio-based solar cell components, which will help the entire industry make photovoltaic solar cells more financially viable by substantially lowering the cost of the cells through the use of petroleum-free materials.

In this week's CLEANTECH column in energy trade publication California Energy Circuit, (CLEANTECH: Making Solar Power Fossil Free), energy correspondent William J. Kelly discusses the concept of life-cycle testing - utilizing the entire life-cycle of a product and its components to determine its total carbon footprint - noting that solar cells generate 0.04 kilograms of carbon dioxide per kilowatt of electricity generated.

The article goes on to note that clean energy researchers see that level declining dramatically due to improvements in the materials used to make the solar cells.

"This article recognizes that BioSolar's BioBacksheet is quickly becoming a driving force in a shift to replace plastic petroleum-based solar cell components with environmentally-friendlier fossil-free ones derived from plant-based products," said Dr. David Lee, CEO of BioSolar.

  • Of all the miracles you see daily....one of the greatest is photo-synthesis.....there are many working to unlock the keys to this wonder.....nature is so giving....sometimes all it takes is listening......something humans have a hard time with.....two ears...one mouth.....listen twice as much as you talk.....Golden Ruler.....Johnnie Hargrave.....

  • Absolutely. What we need to solve our problems is already here. We just need the strength and moral will to change. I think this is a revolutionary step in that direction. For those in Congress who claim they want to end our addiction to foreign oil, this should be something they should want to see more of... but notice how they including the "candidates" always say our addiction to "foreign " oil instead of oil in general. I think that speaks volumes about where they really stand on change. Here's hoping this catches on because this is what we need to see in a climate change bill.

  • Solar is making great strides and should be financially competitive very soon, as long as the politicians don't screw it up again.

  • As we listen more and more to the voice of logic and reason eminating from the conduit of universal knowledge, we discover that all of the solutions to the oil addiction are eco friendly...

This IS good news, progress can be good, if eco friendly...

As regards our fearful leaders, they are the most addicted to oil, because to them, it's also the money that flows from that bottoomless well, endlessly...the hand that's feeding their expensive tastes...they find it difficult to cut it off...

Oil addiction is a deep rooted seed...

  • Jan.....this is the good news post. Very good to hear.

How can we get more good news stuff like that......maybe on "current news?"

My son drives a big truck on an irregular route dispatch ( which means he goes everywhere) and he tells me that the wind mill farms are everywhere. He sees lot of them going up. And I hear news stories about them a lot also.

  • thank you for posting this, its always good to know about new developments like this! over the next few years there will be an almost infinite number of products that currently use petroleum (soaps and lotions, plexi and plastics and on and on) that will need to shift to plant based oils. our next collective step is to move forward wisely (if possible) on how to manage farm land/water use vs food use vs product use. we can do it!

  • I think we can do it too. I am hoping more reach that higher level of consciousness. More companies are seeing it as well as their customers and shareholders demand it.
