Bicycling it isn’t always easy. Busy streets, honking horns, and inadequate city funding for bike lanes and paths can make bicycling an uphill battle. However, with green in the news, the economy in a slump, and summer on its way, it’s getting easier to find reasons why there are some 1.4 billion bicycles and only about 400 million cars in the world today.

Bikes are the most benevolent machine.

The internal combustion engine is the most malevolent machine.

If everyone finally starts riding bikes on just short trips around town, things are going to be better off. and when they see that they can handle short trips, they will be aware that cycling is a viable option for longer rides to work, and longer trips. I ride my bike to work 18 miles round trip daily, weather permitting and it is the best feeling in the world when you pass gas stations on the way in.

Bicycles are indeed a great vehicle as long as we all understand that pedestrians comes first, bicycle comes after and cars comes after that. If we all follow these simple rules things will get just fine through.

i was considering writing a letter to the state of Michigan to make for better bike lane accomodations after a pretty horrid 40 mile trip 2 days ago where maybe 1/3 of my ride had sidewalks. I think if there was a safer way to allow for the alternative to driving a car, more people would be encouraged to turn the engine off and get a little exercise while traveling and saving $4+ per gallon of gas.

I bought a Trek for $300 which is the equivalent to 3 weeks worth of gas in my van...

I live in a rural area, so biking to places is kinda hard. But just for going around the neighborhood, it can be a great workout.

I love my bike. Living in zone 1 of London helps but I rarely need any other transport - when I need a car I just use Streetcar and pay by the hour but my bike does for 95% of my trips.

Southern California is not biker friendly but I am doing my best in riding my bike to work at least once a week for now to get used to it. Let me tell you... my family hates it but they'll thank me later when they start seeing that I don't depend as much on gas as I did before or still do.

I've used a bike for at least 15 out of the last 25 years, not because I've especially wanted to, but mostly since I haven't been able to afford a car most of the time.

I bike and take the bus exclusively. Bikes RULE!
That said I do live in a very bike-friendly town with a lot of accommodation alternative transportation, so I'm lucky.

I need a new bike. I'd ride it to the store if there was a way I could leave it outside without it being taken. I understand one can chain it but that would mean they'd have to have some place to chain it without me making a spot.

Bicycles are one of those inventions that just so 'perfect' the world rarely sees such in many inventions.

I’ve been riding my Schwinn Sierra for 20 years on & off the road & this thing refuses to die. And the best thing about it is that every time I jump on it, I get the same exhilaration I got from that very first ride without the training wheels. Ride on!

I love my bike and this why: I ride it to work, to the gym, on errands, with friends, to train for triathlons, to train for 100 mile rides, to save gas and wear and tear on my car, to save money, to not pollute, to stay in shape, to have an excuse to wear spandex, for work incentives, to get a funny tan line, to swallow bugs, to dodge and pass cars, to have a butt made of iron, to eat bars and packs of gu, to see girls in spandex, to hit 30+mph under the power of my two legs, to get out of the house, to feel the wind in my face and lastly because bikes so cool and fun! I love my '06 Cannondale R700!

The Netherlands is full of bikes, as everything is so packed and covered by public transport it's quite easy to go by without a car.

    ok Bikes are great.

    But cars are great too.
Saying cars are evil, is simplistic and idiotic.can you imagine our world if the internal combustion engine had not been invented?

It is a FANTASTIC thing and people shouldn't be badmouthing it.

the REAL problem is over reliance on it. and the extremely inefficient cars of america. (and D4 types...)

I just bought a bike a month ago and it was the first time I rode one in 8 years. It's true, you never forget how to ride those things. I'm a little shakey but with a little practice I hope to use my bike as a means of transportation on short trips.
