"I don't think we've had a situation like this since Richard Nixon was president" -from the article.
This article is announcing that President Bush used a special rule to prevent his EPA appointees from handing over questionable documents to an investigation into why they denied the State of California permission to implement its own vehicle emission standards. Standards stricter than the EPA's own.
The first question you should be asking yourself is: why would the federal government want to block a state's right to enact stricter pollution standards? Los Angeles is one of the most vehicle-choked, smoggy cities in America. Our state government is acting in the best interests of its citizens. Why block them?
The second question, especially for Republican party members out there (all three of you on Current.com) is this: State's rights. Isn't that a major tenet of the Republican party? That states should be able to decide for themselves when appropriate? Small government?
Here you have California making a major effort to REDUCE VEHICLE EMISSIONS -- that means reduce air pollution and global warming -- and the Bush administration blocks it.
Why?
When we try to get to the bottom of this, we find George W. Bush invoking a special rule: "executive priviledge" to keep the documents secret.
Smells fishy.
Smells like corruption.

Another question is, what happens when Bush and company are out of office? Will the next President take the same tactics and will we ever know the extent of the damage done?
"Executive priviledge" should not be a blank check. -
Bush is almost out of office, but his poor choices will effect us for decades.
-
Yet another reason why California should declare independence.
-
Unbelievable.

They did the same thing when George W and Dick refused to go before the 9/11 commission separately

What did people think would happen when Oil Barrons run the White House? If you haven't watched the documentary " Who Killed the Electric Car" you should. It will answer alot of questions. The government didnt want the largest gas guzzling state in America to start it's Electric car craze to take over the nation in 2001 and take over. So, they shut it down and forced all the automakers who had leased out their EV-1's like GM and Toyota to take back the cars and stop production of them. Then they implemented the Hummer,SUV tax credit of $100,000 and $2,000 for a hybrid.

The weakest part about America, and the reasons Europeans get sick of 'American Ignorance' is because we are only apathetic enough to count the days until Bush is out of office. We are supposed to be citizens with the power to take back what has been hijacked, our civil rights. How can we knowingly go along with the decisions made by those in the White House and not take a UNIFIED STAND against it. I'm glad that current is a start, but hope it fuels a fire.

If a fleet like mine wants to change over to; natural gas for instance.
the EPA charges $50,000 to get one model of engine certiied and then another $10,000 each year if I wish to keep that model in production.
Yeah I think the EPA is all about being green $$$$$$

If we have electric cars and a national fast rail system then you tell me what are we going to do with all that oil? There would be a lot of people that are rich as Midas that would have to be content with what they now have. It is going to be a hard fought battle to get those cars. Are we up for it?

I can't believe Bushie would invoke such a thing. What els is new and what else does anyone expect from this dishonest asshole. If all of his deeds were learned he would be in jail for sure. I hope he ends up there alog with all of his co-horts in crime and greed.

Blood of the people, blood of the earth or blood of the air; all bottom line to the family smashers.
C'mon now, these folks don't even know we all wind up on the same side. Guess monarchy has it's oblivion to flaunt. How do the ignorant say, "god bless the mess". Easy to say, hard to eat your own. No wait, it's quite easy for the vampiyah!
Another tangent this response surely.
Just what the pretorian were looking for.
Pray, spend, classify yourself all you want.
Just don't end up like China, Russia or, wait where are we now? Tick, tock... burn. Only in 'their' America do so many fall, painfully and full of hidden rage. They'd never know how it really is up in those castles.

The US Constitution is under glass and no one ever reads it anymore. States have the right to govern their people according to their people's will and the feds are to keep out of it unless the law goes against the Constitution. Which it obvioulsy does not.
The baby Bush regime has made sure that enough damage has been done, in the US and abroad, that it will take years to crawl up out of this mess.
After 9/11, when he invoked the words, "If they are not with us, they are against us." He was referring to all citizens of the US as well as other countries.
That is why so many people in the US have become fearful of expressing their opinions. The Patriot Act has given powers to the NSA and FBI that did not exist. Now citizens are spied on and "sneak and peaks" are becoming the norm for those that have the temerity to speak out.
Yep, what ever happened to the Bill of Rights. The people need to take these back, and this is a beginning.
The "dumbing down" of America began when leaders remembered how easy it is to control uneducated and ignorant people. -

Bush has absolutely no regard for the people of the United States or the Constitution in which he took an oath to uphold. He believes his job as president is to uphold the promises he gave to the oil companies that got him elected. Thus, the Iraq war, and too many stories just like this one.

and our Senators and Representatives sit on their thumbs and spin... they are the ones who need to do something about this... we hired them to make sure these sorts of things don't happen in our government, and what are they doing about it???
They all need to be fired.-

If you think like a right winger, bad air makes cents and dollars. If Bush and other right wingers keep air quality bad, then big business will make money by selling air respirators and air filtering masks.
Next, poison water and how you can profit.-
