Her name is Duanna Johnson, and she is yet another victim of police brutality. Memphis police were caught on tape brutally assaulting her. What was it about her that triggered such a brutal reaction? Duanna operates with many factors of social stigmatization, she is a prostitute, black, and transsexual: these aforementioned categories work to create Duanna as other, and less than in our society. The police officers in question allegedly referred to her as a he/she, and repeatedly struck her.

This is yet another example of our country and our culture slipping into a culture of torture.
We are now torturing our most vulnerable citizens. -
Frowny face indeed!
This is just wrong.-

Wrong and Sad! That is clearly human rights violation. Abuse of Power can happen with anyone that thinks they can do "anything" with their power. I think that shift of personnel in the room there needs a check up.
-
Cops are always beating minorities. She's lucky to be alive. Something needs to be done.
-
So wrong.

Police need to be tested psychologically. To say that an investigation is underway is ABSURD. The video leaves no room for doubt. No amount of provocation could have deserved such an assault. It is a clear violation of rights and abuse of force.

They fired this cop... but will that make stuff like this stop?

They should have fired the cop that held her down and every cop that did not protect her.
On my honor, I will never betray
my badge, my integrity, my
character or the public trust. I
will always have the courage to
hold myself and others
accountable for our actions. I will
always uphold the Constitution,
my community, and the agency I
serve. -
Two words... Douche bags!
-
Makes you wonder...it's a shame that the few crooked cops leave a bad image for all the great cops...

This is terrible. I can not believe that this still happens. You would figure that all previous offenses (e.g.,Rodney King) leading way to a national change in communal awareness and tolerance would divert such a incident from happening, but I guess all logic and rational gets thrown out the window once 'the' authority gets questioned.
I hope the police officers at that precinct get what they deserve. This woman did do something against the law, but once the police took it into their own hands to judge her, not on her deed, but on her character she became a victim of a hate crime. This is ridiculous, I really hope this story gets some more attention. -
Screw Civil Rights Violation. It's human rights violation.
Good for her for standing up to him when she did. He looked scared. That's why he had to cuff her.
Disgusting. Really is it necessary to hit someone with handcuffs? Ever? I don't think so.
I'm glad that one of her attorneys stated that the majority of cops in Memphis were good, there's just a select stupid, idiotic few. -
I feel that this is a cultural problem! Special social and behavior classes should be giving to all personnel from that Police Department. They would had saved a lots of tax payer's money if they had done that in the past.
-
How do we keep running into these cops that think they are supposed to dispense justice as opposed to simply upholding the law.
-
This shows yet again that some prejudiced law enforcers or goverment workers are corrupt and abusive of their power.Prejudice, racism, and rights violation runs amok those departments of law.

I'm pretty sure his white male ego had a boost when he called the transsexual names and beat her up.

I'm pretty sure it's just his ego, period.

this travesty is pervasive in police culture around the country. Its sad when people must fear those who are supposed to protect them.

I think the bystanders are just as accountable. You have just as much responsibility. I have been witness to a situation like that, and I spoke up knowing that I'd get myself into trouble. I did it, and I'll do it again, for any kind of abuse, verbal or physical. The scariest thing in the world for me, is to be in danger and have witnesses who simply stand around and watch it happen. Don't just blame the cops or the abuser. Blame the cowards who stand around and watch.

Fuck that pig and all others like him.
Thanks to all the cops who stand for everything opposite this. -
of course it is a civil rights violation! and a human rights violation as well. it makes me so upset that i live in a country where people like myself are discriminated for living the way that we should...comfortably!
i hope severe justice is served.-

im glad to see this type of thing being taken seriously and action being taken against the officers involved. many times this happens, the officers are freed, or not even investigated...its reassuring when you see justice being served
-
As children we are taught to respect police officers but as I've grown older, seeing more and more of this, I have little to no respect for the job and those who perform it. I'm not sure even the most honorable officer would come to a transsexuals defense when surrounded by his buddies. The group think that occurs among officers is why this continues, it is an us against them mentality.
Plus, hitting someone with handcuffs is like using brass knuckles, the damage can be severe. Would anything have happended to the officer if it wasn't for the video? Doubtful since one officer would have had to come forward against the others.-
